I think it is a reasonable strategy to have some 'deterrents' (goons) to protect the smaller skilled players, especially in preparation for Johnny Hockey's arrival next season.
Fools who attempt to take runs at our little guys are likely to be dismembered by MacDermid or Gillies in the AHL, or Big Ern & Westgarth if Johnny makes the Flames. It's an old school strategy, but an effective one.
Don't like Gillies. Would have preferred the Flames had re-signed PL3 at the time, as I think he did his job fine in the AHL.
This will allow Burke to call up MacDermid when he feels he needs to (i.e. Canucks), without leaving the Heat wanting of some muscle. I have a tough time seeing Gillies being a positive addition though, and I like goons.
Apparently Gillies' on-ice warmup is hilarious. He doesn't even touch the puck. He comes out of the bench gate. Skates along the centre red line with his skate on it or just over. Turns around, skates back along the centre line. Does a few scarecrow twists with his stick over his shoulders. Does some leg stretches. Takes a knee at the middle faceoff dot and just stares at the opposing team. Yeah. I really really hope he's in tonight against the Bulldogs.
