Yeah, but that cuts both ways. If someone leaves a car out by Sarcee trail or down south by Glenmore, how will they get it back to the more central areas? If they have enough cars to saturate that area it'd be great, but I doubt they will at first.

According to their website, they have a "third party fuel provider" fill up cars that are 20% full or less when they're dropped off. Otherwise there's a fuel card in the vehicle, and it's included in the rate.

Me too, I'm not sure if I would use it, either, but nice to have the option. Fortunately I already know that smartcars are totally gutless so you have to change your driving habits (eg when you're turning right on a red light with oncoming cars - NOT, unless they're at least a block away). It's a great idea for Calgary where transit sucks, if this had been around when I first moved here I may not have bought a car. I hope it catches on.

Very interesting, I'm going to sign up as well. As I don't have a car, doing errands or visiting friends/family on a Sunday can be a real pain with the bus.
And because I'm in insurance, what happens if you finish your use of the vehicle and then an hour later, the car is a victim of a hit and run? You can't prove the accident occured after you dropped it off... But I do like that there is 5 million of liability insurance on it

You see these cars parked all over the place in Vancouver, it looks very convenient. Here they are blue/white smart cars.

They have set up some display cars and are answering questions in front of Bankers Hall today. Official launch is July 21 with 200 cars.

Isn't the whole point that people from all areas (not just dt) can use it?

Sure, but 200 cars isn't enough to cover the whole area they have as a home zone.

Why do you say that? If someone leaves one off by Sarcee, there are a lot of people who live in signal hill/strathcona/christie/aspen who could take the car to a more central location.

Don't get me wrong, I think this is a great idea. But hypothetically someone from those areas could bring the car back. But they're not likely to check unless one is usually around. With the size of the area and number of cars, I don't think there'll usually be one to be found in any of the outlying areas. We'll see, and I hope it works.

That would make quite the youtube video, wouldn't it. Offroading in a rental smart car.

Bump!
Car2Go is now up and running Calgary, if you sign up and use the promo code ONWARD you get 30 minutes free driving time and the registration fee ($35) is waived.
I signed up for it just for the heck of it, looking at the map I can already see about 5 cars within a couple of minutes walk from my place.

I got a chance to try it last night. It was fairly easy to go through the steps to start driving. It was my first time in a smart car though and the gas and brake pedals took a little getting used to.

Registered with the code just for the hellavit since its free, depsite owning a car. I've seen a few of these around town and it seems like a good idea espescially for those who don't have cars and need one in a pinch; rates seem a bit high compared to traditional rentals, but I guess you save not paying for gas and having to go to a rental agency.
