Default Tiger vs Phil "The Match"

Don't see a thread for this yet. Excited to see this play out Friday. Lots of interesting prop bets out there. Should be entertaining!

I might have been interested in paying for this in 2007 when they were both at their peak and really hated each other, but now it's mostly a big meh. Seeing Shadow Creek on TV might be the best reason to order.

I'd pay if Tiger was playing someone like Brooks Koepka.

What a cynical non event. Tiger and Lefty fake-smiling their way through a halfassed, casual round of golf while mentally tallying their earnings and secretly wishing the other one would get struck by lightning.

Someone would have to pay ME to watch this nonsense.

Could be entertaining since they will be mic'd up and flapping each other all round.

I fully expect tiger to take it by hole 14 or 15 though.

The prop betting could be fun, Phil is a degenerate so maybe he'll bet one of his green jackets or something.

You get that this type of thing started in the 1960's right?

Just watched the HBO 24/7 episode on this. I'm not too interested in watching the actual match, but the documentary was well done.

I think they way overestimated the appetite to pay for this. This was a "Cool, I'll definitely flip to channel X/livestream to watch this!" not, "I'll be sure to drop $20 to PPV this!".

i'd sure like to understand the finances of this - the winner gets $9 million (which both golfers say will be donated), there are no tickets being sold so some very rough math would suggest the total cost to stage this event might be:
- $9 m for prize money
- $1 million for misc expenses
- $1.5 for productions costs

Total cost $11.5 m divided by $20 (suggested retail pricing for PPV) means that you need to have 575,000 viewers buy this to break even (this assumes that there is no advertising revenue).

I am trying to decide if I think there is really enough of a market for this for it to provide some positive cashflow for some promoter.

I would never be interested enough in this to drop $20 - maybe $7 or so.

So Tiger and Phil were on PTI yesterday and explaining why there is no crowd and why it's on PPV. Phil was harping on the fact that by having no one there, the live betting experience for people at home will be more accurate. They will both be miked up so that you can hear all of the conversations between them and each other or their caddies. They then can use their normal language as well (however Tiger already doesn't hold back on national TV, so I don't see the change there).

More than anything Phil sounded like a snake oil salesman. I agree with most that if it was on cable I might tune in for a bit, however there is no way to get me to drop $20 on an event that would've been great 10 years ago. I get more joy out of watching the Master's Par 3 than an absolute nothing match

Hey wait. They aren't gambling their own money? Why the hell would anyone pay any money to watch a couple of washed up golfers? Maybe if it included a 5 round boxing match at the end.

Oh i didn't know that. Is that a major championship in golf?

I would pay $20 if his ex wife was commentating in the booth.

Wait, how can you call him washed up when you didn't even know what the tour championship was?

Yeah, that sounds exciting. Tiger would be great mic’d up with his natural charisma.
