Something in me feels like we should try and get a non superstar goalie that has some good stats the last few seasons.
Halak, Khudobin, Greiss or Lehner.
Basically try and duplicate how we got Kipper. Thats doable right? RIGHT?!
I really miss Kipper.

Lehner also known for calling out his team. No thanks.
Unfortunately the Flames got Kipper because Sutter had just come from SJ, and knew him. (And actually was reportedly targeting one of the other two). Tre knew Smith from his previous organization. Smith is Treliving’s Kipper.

Didn't Kipper have terrible stats before coming to Calgary

Yeah but I wonder if some of that was due to his documented struggles with alcohol. Seems like hes been able to get past that.
Could be heading towards a resurgence. And certainly looks good so far this year.
Khudobin would be a good get I think.

Maybe, but without even looking probably better than Smith this year.

It seems like the lesser of two evils, lol, continue to play and expect the same of Smith or give Gillies a crack it.

I get the disappointment with Smith. A stinker every single game is not acceptable.
I still think I would rather hope that he finds his game than give the reigns to Gillies

Its tricky though because it may take Smith another 5 games to figure it out and thats 10 more points we are sort of letting slip away.
Put it this way, if any other player on the team was struggling as much as Smith they'd be scratched. IMO Peters has already tried to let Smith work through it.

If Rittich can grab the net I don't mind Smith as a back-up for the rest of the year. But that hinges on him being comfortable and accepting of that role.
The question for me isn't about having a good back-up. The question is how do you solidify the starter's job. So Gillies is largely a non factor in this conversation to me. I don't view him as a candidate to take over #1 duties and they don't need him to be the back-up.
This weekend is tough as with back to backs I think we will see Rittich in one and Smith and the others. After that, hopefully Rittich gets a stretch to run with it.

I agree with that. As Bingo said in another thread, it seems like you have to move on from Step 1 (hope Smith works through it) to Step 2 (give Rittich a crack)

Rittich is young and rested. If he shows well against the Kings I throw him right back out there against the Sharks. Even with the travel and the quick turnaround you need to play the hot hand don't you?

Anyone actually see that happening? Not me, he has hit the wall, he is done, and to keep starting him puts the team at a competitive disadvantage every time.

I think its pretty clear he hasn't been the same since that injury last year. Whether its mental or physical I don't know, but he's just not the same goalie.

^ Exactly. Its been 7 months (off season rest included) and he's the same as he was when he came back. This isn't something he plays his way out of. This is it.

I hear Karri Ramo & Reto Berra are still active.
We should've sent the Leafs a 3rd for Curtis McElhinney when we had the chance.

We have to do something. This is too good a team to suffer with below par goaltending. If Rittich is the guy, let's figure that out. Hell, I'm good with waiving Smith to the AHL and letting him figure his game out while Gillies or Parson gets a go as well.
Need a goalie that has a better than .900 save % and doesn't let in soul crushing goals (ala the first goal by the ducks last night). I really liked Smith last year and I don't know if it is his injury and mental, but he has had a large enough sample size to show that this is the new Smith.

It's sad. Like many have mentioned; Treliving failing miserably to address the goalie issue, time and time again, will be his undoing.
There weren't many fans of his choices for goalies, either. Elliot and now Smith?
Ben Bishop is looking alright with that .921 save percentage.
At this point, I would take the Chad back.

It's almost a guarantee Smith and Rittich split the games this weekend. We may as well take a deep breath and see how that goes.
Then we can descend into sheer panic as necessary.

The Flames not getting Bishop isn't on BT.

I'm just as frustrated with Smith's play as everybody else, but how can you tell he has hit a wall? Or that he is done?
Plenty of goalies have gone through rough stretches where they have lost their confidence and bounced back to being solid again.
I'm not arguing that is the case here because I really don't know, but what is it that makes it so definitive about Smith? I ask because unfortunately it kind of looks like we are tied to him this season whether we like it or not.

Are you talking about them not being able to reach KK? Was that for a Bishop deal? And is that a real thing?
