Why though? They really don’t help that much, your stick is much more effective at stopping a shot 5hole.

Growing up I had pretty small pads. I used the Louisville tps pads. They were fine except it was becoming more common for goalie instructors to teach the butterfly postion. These pads were not made with that in mind.

Example.

I think keeping long above the knee is a safety thing. I stopped getting bruised knees and thighs after they got bigger . I didn't stop more pucks 5 hole because of the longer pads since the tops are malleable. I did notice tho I didnt have the puck ding me every 5 hole shot tho.

I think smaller leg pads would be fine if every goalie was still playing the stand up still vs butter fly.
Look at that 5 hole. That bottom guy looks pretty easy to score on.

I sure did get some dings before getting butterfly pads.

Also the first time on the ice was comical, had to make some serious adjustment to the tightness of the straps

No, the pads rotate when you go down, and your knees bend in a different direction

It's even funny to look at pads like Smith's and Bishop's in the pic on the previous page, and then to look at Kiprusoff's pads. Things have even changed in the last 10 years. Hell, even look at a bigger goalie like Turek's pads when he was with the Flames.

How much smaller they are than what goalies currently wear, and that even in the last decade pads have continued to get bigger. You think those look equivalent to what goalies wear today?

I’m almost certain that was the joke.

Tail end of last nights' interview, Mike Smith talks about getting stung a few times (oddly enough, he stopped all the shots with the new equipment). Multiply that by games, practices, optional skates, etc... and someone's going to be on IR:

Early to mid 90s is the Golden Age of goalies - the talent, the masks, the pads, all of it is so, so cool.
