Not NHL but when I was a kid I really liked Steve Falwell and Howie Anozik(sp) who did Lethbridge Hurricanes games in the 80’s and 90’s. (I actually think Steve did Lethbridge Bronocos games before the Hurricanes but that was before my time.) He reminded me a lot of Peter Mahr and was very knowledgeable and easy to listen to.
Steve Falwell did broadcast Broncos games throughout the 70’s and 80’s. called all of the Sutters. Howie Yanosik joined the broadcast sometime in the mid 80’s.
Speaking of that era, Don Whitman was great but sure loved his Jets and Oilers.
...I have never liked Ferraro. Most guys I can deal with, but not him.or Remenda. There are people who do better than others but I don't like to hate on all the people as it sometimes feels like it is the cool thing to do...
What is it that a lot of people don’t like about Ferraro’ colour? I think he is great—easily one of the most knowledgeable and insightful in-game broadcasters, and he is a very good communicator. He does a regular segment on local Vancouver radio, and it is always really good.

I used to like Mark Lee when he did national broadcasts, although I always used to think it was weird when he shouted "Jarome Iginla's mom!" after Iggy's 500th.
(For the record -- "mobbed.")

The best "announced" game I've ever watched was when there were no announcers. TV crews went on strike so the broadcast of the game was simply a video feed with the sounds of the crowd.

Dallas is best. Daryl Reaugh as colour and this Bogorad is decent
I am happy they moved razor back to color. So much better there. I was initially worried about Bogorad as he has been the host of the pre/post show the last few years, but the Athletic had a nice piece on him chronicling his history as an announcer. He seems much more suited for it. Also, the reason the studio show was awful is most likely the analysts. Craig Ludwig and Brett Severyn are awful.

The sound of Bob Cole's voice is like the anticipation of a letter from and old friend, the silence of fresh falling snow in the mountains, or the comfort of a good book by a giant stone fireplace in a beautiful log cabin. The GOAT voice.
I will admit his play calling has tapered dramatically in the past 10 years.
The best play caller now is Doc Emerick hands down, not even close. Consistently knows when to ramp up the excitement, how to segway, and how to let color and analysts come in at the right times. The best.

Team Specific:
Dallas guys, SJ guys, Hawks guys. They know their enemy and talk about them fairly. Probably the least hoerific crews I've listened to.
National guys:
Gord Miller. Love his calls and he honed his craft for ages with the WJC tourny.
Doc Emerick for sure. Probably an acquired taste but he is the U.S version of Bob Cole
Chris Cuthbert: Yep, #1 guy IMO. Hopefully this SN deal gets split between TSN and SN again. That should be coming up soon.
Would also like TSN to take over Calgary sports.

That would be a dream come true, but unfortunately the NHL stupidly gave Sportnet exclusivity until 2025 I believe
Ferraro can be okay in terms of insight some of the time, but is so whiny and persistent, and you can see how his yapping on the ice really grated on his opponents.
I don’t get the Emrick love.
And I haven’t seen any love for Pierre McGuire here. (Who is, incidentally, a really good radio interviewee)
I saw a game, I think it was New Jersey crew, and the commentators seemed good. No idea who they were. And the Kings crew was ok, a year or two ago. Also no idea who they were.
Flames fans are really fortunate with their broadcast crew.

Probably because he's awful.

I like PBP guys who I don't notice. It means they aren't annoying me with stupid repetitive references nor do they have patented inflections that make the call more about them than the game. On the other hand I like analysists who I notice because of interesting comments, and not pablum.
Agreed, he shouts like it’s pro wrestling or a monster truck rally.
(Should have been more clear in case anyone mistakenly confused my appreciation for his interviews with an appreciation for his colour work)
Here he is absolutely stepping all over, and ruining, an all time great moment and a fantastic call by Miller.
It's not just that he's over the top, it's that he's a goddamn moron. He says #### that makes no sense ("HE'S PERCOLATING") for no reason other than, I have to assume, to create internet memes. He's also just a weird guy who says weird, awkward things in interviews.

For me bob Cole and harry neale are the gold standard. I also really liked Don Wittman -who may be easily one of the most versatile broadcasters ever as he was good at hockey, football, curling, track and field.
Joe Bowen of the leafs is also enjoyable.
I’d like to hear more of that guy from the penguins with all the sayings - his name escapes me at the moment
