2020-2021 CHL prospects general discussion thread
Flames have only 2 prospects in the CHL before the 2020 draft. Will update the thread after the 2020 draft.
The QMJHL season starts up on Oct 2 and the WHL season starts up on Dec 4.
QMJHL
2019 1st LW Jakob Pelletier
Pelletier was traded in the offseason to the Val-d'or Foreurs where he was promptly named captain of the team. Early indications are that he is to be paired with center Justin Robidas (son of former NHLer Stephane) for their top offensive line. Robidas is projected to go in the 2nd round of the 2021 draft by some and could maybe a projected 1st round pick if he has a strong season.
2020 3rd D Jeremie Poirier
2020 5th C/RW Ryan Francis
OHL
2020 6th C Rory Kerins
WHL
2019 7th G Dustin Wolf
Dustin Wolf will defend his title as CHL goaltender of the year. Look for Wolf to try and carry the Silvertips deep into the playoffs this season.
2020 1st C Connory Zary

Pelletier had a 1g + 1a and named 2nd star in his first game of the season. Val-d'or lost 4-3 in the shootout.

So, Val-d'or has scored 6 goals so far and Pelletier has 5 points. I like that ratio.
Do we know yet how things will be treated with these players (and those drafted this week) when NHL training camps open?
I assume the Flames will be able to bring Pelletier up for his 9 games to start the season if they wanted to.

Maybe bad news for the QMJHL and their season. A player has tested positive from the Armada. If it isn't contained could see the season postponed or cancelled.

Well, that is not going to help in getting any of the other junior leagues going. Yikes.

Any chance they have a roster size of 80000?
Youth sports teams have long needed to improve basic hygiene. Those habits certainly carry through to elite amateur/pro.
Hopefully they come clean in where they suspect they screwed it up

The QMJHL has announced all teams in the East and West divisions are postponing their games until Oct 28.
This means Pelletier will have at least a 2 week break.
Francis and Poirier play in the Martitime division and should still be playing games in the meantime unless circumstances change.

The WHL has announced a start date for the season of January 8, with training camps starting after the Christmas break: https://whl.ca/article/western-hocke...regular-season
All games will be played within the Divisions, which will avoid the cross-border travel issue.
I suspect this will be similar to what the NHL ultimately decides to do as well, right down to the dates.

I remember reading that the OHL was thinking of banning physical contact for the upcoming season. Is that still their decision?

That wasn't the league, it was the provincial government: https://www.tsn.ca/ohl-s-return-won-...leod-1.1535686

Poirier with 1a -1 in 2 games this past weekend.
6gp 1g 5a 5pts -4
Francis with 1g 2a -2 in 2 games this past weekend including a 10-2 blowout loss
8gp 1g 8a 9pts -8
Val' d'or is scheduled to play a game on Oct 30, so barring any more shutdowns, Pelletier should be playing again this weekend.

Going to have to keep my eyes on Ryan Francis more. He seems like a riser. It's not just hollow production like a Joly.
And he played in Cole Harbour...

The other thing about Francis too is he's been super unlucky goal-scoring wise this year so far. Has by far the most dangerous shots on his team with 18, which also places him in a tie for 6th in the league

Jakob Pelletier was clutch in a 4-3 SO win. Had 2 goals including a goal with 7 seconds left to tie the game. His goal in the shootout clinched the game for the Foreurs.
6gp 3g 6a 9pts +3
Val d'Or has 5 more games scheduled before the start of Hockey Canada's WJC camp.
