lol! This is a comment of ignorance!

Everyone knew who Kipper was when the playoffs started. Dude was nominated for the Vezina at that point.

That's fine. Binnington came out of nowhere in the second half of the season in similar fashion and was nominated for the Calder, and I'd be willing to bet that before the playoffs started 96% of hockey fans had no idea who he was. Same with Hammond for the Sens in 2015, Halak for the Habs in 2010, whoever.

Jeremy Lin was a global phenomenon in 2012. Almost everyone in the world knew who he was. He was a huge name, and he's still a big name to this day, despite his reduced ability, mainly because of his recognizable status as the first Chinese-American in the NBA. To a greater degree, it's like the Jays getting Upton in 2016. That was the point of the post. Sure, everyone in Calgary and most hardcore fans were aware of Kiprusoff in '04. But he was still the new face in a league full of more recognizable guys like Hasek, Brodeur, Belfour, Turco, Luongo, Kolzig, Osgood, Theodore, Nabokov, Giguere, Vokoun, Khabibulin, etc.

A better comparison for Kiprusoff would be Pascal Siakam. Most fans leaguewide have no idea who he is but he's arguably up there with Kawhi in terms of importance.

The common between them, they are both Canadian teams making it to the finals of their respective sport. That is all, nothing else is common.

I would say the Raptors are more like the 2011 Canucks, good regular season team that underachieved in the playoffs until finally making it to the championship series.

Hopefully the Raptors win it.

They might be the underdog against the Warriors but that's far from a total out of the blue Cinderella run

I'd say they are alike but that Flames team was amazing and basketball sucks.

The teams have nothing in common. The Flames were the ultimate underdogs throughout the season and in every round. The Raps have been a top team for years and went all in for one big run.

You can compare the fans. Like the 04 run expanded the Flames fan base and brought back lost fans the current Raptors run seems to be doing the same. I have noticed all sorts of friends that I didn't know were basketball fans cheering on the Raps. Personally I gave up on the NBA around 15 years ago after the Griz left, the Raps kept sucking, and that whole Lakers Kings WWE BS happened and I'm even starting to get interested again.

Golden state is a newly emerged elite team? They've been to the finals 5 times and won it 3 or 4 of those times... I think they're actually a dynasty.

One of many who is too boring; thinks that there should be rules regarding grammar in custom user titles, and also makes moderators wonder if there is a charachter limit here. I mean come on- you would think that would be a limitation in the software

I mean, nearly every single thing in that table is either wrong or a major apples to oranges comparison. In particular, best player is not a synonym for "heart and soul" player. The corporate created "Maple Leaf Square/Jurassic Park" is a pale shadow of the Red Mile, and calling a team in its fifth consecutive NBA finals a "newly-emerged league elite" just screams bandwagon fan.

Ew gross, not even close. I love Kawhi as much as the next guy, but he's just a superstar looking to cash in. No loyalty to any club. Iggy spent 17 seasons here and was truly a heart and soul guy PLUS a superstar.

Also (and I think this point is lost on a lot of folks) the reason why the Flames became "Canada's team" (don't like that term) is because of the financial climate of the NHL. The Flames were truly a small market team that couldn't afford to compete. You took a rag tag bunch of guys led by a star winger and star goalie, and they grinded to a SCF which is best part of the story.

A guy I have never heard of until now. That seems about right seeing as this is a HOCKEY FORUM.

Why are people talking about this here? Especially since I have learned that the comparison made in the OP is desperately feigned this entire thread is completely irrelevant here.

Basketball on the FOI? This must be what hell is like.

My point is they ain't Lakers, Bulls, Celtics, or Spurs. Not yet, but after this finals, they will. The Warriors are still pretty new to me.

To each his own.

Calling the Warriors new is like calling the Bulls new in 1997

After this finals they will? Why after this one? What are you talking about?... I think the key term here is, they are new to you. Probably because you don't follow the NBA much... so the comparison actually makes no sense whatsoever. They are nothing like Tampa in 2004... if the GSW win this year, it'll just be another notch on the belt for them.

the Warriors are 18-1 in their last 19 playoff series.

Their lone series loss, was the year they:

-set the regular season record for wins in NBA history
-had a foot/ankle injury to their best player (and the first unanimous league MVP in history) limiting his effectiveness
-had an injury to their starting center taking him out of the series allowing their opponent to exploit them down low with size
- took a 3-1 lead in their series against an extremely good team featuring arguably the best player in the world still in his prime with a strong supporting cast
- had their best defensive player and point forward suspended for mouthing off to officials in what could have been the title clinching game five
-had a back injury to their 6th man (and LeBron matchup specialist) limiting him in games 6 and 7
- had their starting small forward slump offensively at the worst time of the year
- and despite all of the above, Kyrie Irving still had to have the series of a lifetime including hitting the single biggest, toughest shot in a contemporary Finals for the Warriors to lose an extremely tight game seven

That's how much had to go wrong for them in one playoff series to not currently be going for their fifth consecutive championship.

Okay. I had a change of heart. You win, I lose.

The Warriors truly are a dynasty.

Forget that row, ladies and gentlemen. My apologies.
