This has lots of "oh, you like hockey? name all the players in the NHL" vibes. You know that no one can watch every player equally. People like JFresh spend a ton of time on twitter explaining why the stats don't always come out in practice. I would argue his success online is due to the even-keeled nature about the whole thing. Of course people zero in on the smarmy comments, that's fine, but it's probably him getting frustrated explaining the same things over and over to people who aren't engaging in good faith.

I am not saying this as a slight in fact it is a valuable service...because none should watch every player equally...that sounds too much like a job. I appreciate JFresh's contributions and the work he does. I never thought his pleb comment was sanctimonious either, he has to get his point across in the least amount of words, it works for me.

Advanced stat guys very often come across as "hey, I respect your opinion and all that, but now I am going to explain to you what is really happening here". Many of the true believers are way over-indoctrinated, and jfresh would probably qualify on that front, IMO.

Stats guys put way too much credence in their numbers, but then they often top it off with the holier than thou condescension.

As someone who spent an entire career waist-deep in stats, where one of the most important things is filtering out all of the noise and the data mining, and following the doctrine that you can never really be certain with the results, watching these guys be so in love with their numbers, which are so riddled with noise, can be pretty painful.
I think that it's a natural human trait to look towards something that feels more certain and quantifiable in the face of uncertainty. It's why humans generally speaking are terrible at evaluating statistics. I think advanced stats are having their moment so people probably take the measures seriously (too seriously?). I also think that it's an interesting development in professional sports. Being able to quantify how a player affects the game in ways beyond points, penalty minutes, and plus minus - albeit imperfectly - is interesting and fun for fans to look at.

I agree that perhaps we forget to remind ourselves that there are lies, damn lies, and statistics. We all look at the WAR% and (I at least always) fail to recognize that it is an aggregate of other advanced stats. That's why I appreciate Bingo's write-ups as he sets out the ones important to him and talks about trends versus the eye-test.

Stats are a tool, and shouldn't be used alone.

It would be like using tooth paste without a tooth brush.

JFresh is usually more down to Earth and not one of those snobby analytics types like they were 4-5 years ago. He plays in a beer league, acknowledges the blind spots of his model etc. But yea "pleb filter" is just a weird thing to say. Probably was just awkward wording.

Weegar's uncle/agent told Hailey Salvian that he is confident a deal gets done and is "hopeful" it gets done before the season starts.

So reading between the lines, sounds like a framework has been agreed to, just a matter of hammering down details.

McKinnon off the board is one less reason to not sign Weegar.

Rare for Treliving to comment on a contract negotiation like this unless the deal is close to being done.

Why would Treliving bring this up unless Weegar is planning on holding out from camp and demanding a trade?
