Torn on this one...I get the resentment to publicly fund the project but also think headway needs to be made on both sides. I don't like the Flames waving the we'll move card and also don't like the city's we don't care attitude. Stop using the press to throw taunts at each side and just hash your issues out in private. The media is just there to throw gas on things.
I've had interactions with Ken King over the years and have always found him to be reasonable. I think he just stepped in to keep the business side focused on him and not the hockey ops guy that reacted to a dumb comment while at the podium.

Just when you think the Flames couldn't look any more incompetent...

Something gets built.
It won't be the sweetheart deal the City of Edmonton gave Deuce Bigalow, and it will instead be a partnership with the Stampede, City and CSEC.

Sorry I haven't read the entire thread.
1. I love Burkie for speaking his mind and not backing down from a good debate. I agree with most of what he says on this.
2. I don't think the city or the flames are affected by Burke's comments. They will get the deal done.
3. I was going to answer the poll question, but I am too lazy/dumb to figure out what it means.

Burke should lose his job over this, and that's coming from a season ticket holder who strongly supports the building of a new rink with some public funds. What an idiot.

I agree. Such tone deaf comments from a guy who makes millions doing nothing but tell old hockey stories and lame one liners.

I didn't read all of the comments but am I the only one who thinks Burke poorly represents the Flames and the Flames ownership group? Would it be too much effort to tie his tie when he is representing the Flames in his professional capacity?
It didn't take long for the Flames to distance themselves from his comments from earlier today!

What meltdown? The laughter at the Flames owners costing themselves hundreds of millions of dollars to move to a worse market? It'll be absolutely hilarious to most of us.

A conspiracy theory is that this was intentional, so Burke can keep pushing their side of the spectrum in the public eye, while King focuses on arena negotiation.

So Burke reiterates the same message King has been preaching, and instead of backing and supporting him, they basically throw him under the bus. This is getting ridiculous.

He did not throw him under the bus. He just said that he's not the talking voice for this subject.

Fair enough, I suppose it depends how you interpret the message. From my viewpoint, they missed an opportunity to show a unified front.

I mean Burke's comments were a lot more over the top than anything King has said. This beaut in particular is just mind bottling

Brian Burke speaking to Cdn. Club. Says when Flames proposed Calgary Next, he's surprised city didn't say thank you
|
Yeah Brian, why didn't we thank you for the chance to take a billion out of the city coffers and leave us with a nice tax increase, nevermind the minimum 20% ticket price increase and even higher concession increases? We should have sent him a big thank you card, really. Our bad.

How would they be costing themselves hundreds of millions of dollars if they sold the Flames for hundred of millions of dollars to an interested party willing to have the team play in Seattle? Sounds like they would make out like bandits. The Flames owners don't own the Flames to make money, you don't really think they would remain the owners of the team if they moved out of town do you?

Couldn't have said it any better.
The pendulum swings wide on this one, I can guarantee people would be upset to see the Flames leave regardless of what they say now so spare us the glorious tirades.
At the end of the day people, tax money is going to build the rink one way or another. Facilities aren't free, everyone calm down and let the "city planners" do what they have to do.

I think everyone was calming down and letting the City and CSEC get to work until this loud mouth obnoxious man decided to speak out of circle. Set them right back to where they just seemed to crawl out of. That's what frustrates me.

This was exactly my reaction when hearing about the quote.
Burke being dumb enough to think people would fall for this is funny.
If the Flames moved, it would be hilarious. Calgary would get another NHL in months.

Very sneaky by the Flames trying the good cop/ bad cop scenario. So scripted.
