For overrated players a long list of Leafs and Habs come to mind: Jose Theodore, Saku Koivu, Tomas Kaberle, Tomas Plekanec, Alexei Kovalev, Scott Gomez, Sheldon Souray.

You can scan the list of the 2006 Canadian Olympic Men's Hockey Team with names like Doan, Smyth, McCabe, Heatley, Redden, Bertuzzi and Brad Richards.

Most overrated player of all time though?

Has to be Dion Phaneuf.

Especially Malkin. That guy is a generational player.

Not sure if he's the #1 all time overrated, but I always thought Grant Fuhr was overrated.

Toews is an excellent pick. He's never had a full season over a point per game. He's played 82 games in a season twice. He's cleared the 70 point threshold exactly once. He's won one major regular season award - a Selke - in the shortened lockout season (despite absolutely not deserving it).

Yet he's in the top 100 players and for a few years there were people who got paid to talk or write about hockey who were suggesting he was a legitimate alternative to Crosby in the "best player in the world" discussion.

Dude hasn't ever been the best player on his own team.

^ That said, I think Toews is an awesome player who I'd love to have on the Flames. Guy comes up clutch and is as steady as they come. But top 100? Come on. Not even close IMO.

He actually has 6 cups, two without Gretzky. Gretzky, on the other hand, couldn't win one without Messier.

Rick Nash. Now first of all 437 goals in just over 1000 games isn't anything to sneeze about but his career highs were 42 goals and 79 points and it always kind of grinded my gears when the media salivated over this guy for international play and he at times overshadowed Iginla who was by far the better player. It seemed like he was always discussed as being an elite player when he was a really good regular season player on a lot of bad teams. When he did play for playoff teams he never delivered as 18 goals in 89 playoff games is very mediocre at best for a supposed goal scorer.

Two guys who instantly come to mind are Mike Modano and Jeremy Roenick. Great players? Sure thing. Superstars? No way. Maybe it's from growing up in the States during the 90s but these two guys have and are still just shoveled down our throats when it comes to the 'Legends of Hockey'. I always think it's funny that they both came up in Canadian Juniors as again, the way they are talked about today you would think these guys were the pioneers of College Hockey.

Compare them both to a guy like Pat LaFontaine who, IMO, is incredibly underrated and is really not talked about a lot at all. American hockey fans are weird though--there is a huge boom of them who couldn't tell you much prior to 2006 and I'd be willing to bet that most think PL is French-Canadian.
