Treliving was right not to overpay/re-sign him after his career best 19-goal, 44-point season. Proved to be a shrewd move on the then-new GM's part.

I'm not sure about that. I like to think of Nathan MacKinnon as a faster, more agile, more skilled version of Joe Colborne. Another good comparison the Flames have now is Matthew Tkachuk, but he's more of a much smarter, more skilled version of Joe Colborne.

Another way to put it is that Joe Colborne is a less-skilled, lower-performing, much less flashier and not as smart version of Wayne Gretzky.
