Sounds like he has a minor injury (noted in one of the other threads)

I’m hoping he makes the move to the bigs. He might get a shot at the 13 position or even 12. I don’t think they want him going back to Stockton IMHO unless he totally craps out. Treliving is going to do his best to keep him around. Poirier just has to do his part

Also partially sounds like the Flames are trying to get him through waivers with minimal risk. Probably shouldn't be in Calgary at the moment, and still needs to show.
A year from now he is fair game. But it would be a shame to lose such a good asset that they have invested so much into.
I think a team like Vegas could keep him on the roster with a waiver claim, but it might not be what's best for the player and his development, and his career.

CapFriendly started tracking waivers in May of 2016. Since that time, players have been placed on waivers 377 times, and players have been placed on unconditional waivers for purpose of release an additional 35 times. Of those 412 placements, a player has been claimed 30 times. A waiver placement has resulted in a claim about 7.3% of the time.
17 teams have claimed a player on waivers since May of 2016

How many of those were mid-season? My impression has been that a player is much more likely to be picked up later on than during pre-season.

Once again, we have a lot more familiarity with Poirier and have seen some flashes of NHL upside. But every other team is trying to sneak similar guys through to the farm and have no room on the NHL roster for a Poirier.

Poirier has to show he is better than wingers on the 4th line. Has he made the coaching staff believe he is better than Brouwer or Hamilton or Hathaway? I don't know. I know I'd rather lose Hamilton or Hathaway to waivers than Poirier, but there would have to be a team out there willing to give them a full time spot on their NHL roster for that to happen. I think at this time of year all of those players clear.

Interesting. Would be curious to see how many training camp / very early season waiver claims were made

This is just it. Since we can put a face and name to a player in our eyes it elevates the player. How many times have we seen players put on waivers and the eventual response is "ooh, so and so was a higher pick, Flames should take a flyer on him" and the player ends up going through.
At this time of the year every team is in the same boat as they pair down their rosters. Picking a player up at this time is only going to make them have to send another one of their roster players down.
It is the waiver wire during the season where it starts to get a little difficult as every team is at the roster limit and like we found out with Byron, it is injuries or events that cause teams to look at the wire. It is all about timing.

Taking a while to get to 5000

He means various players have bumps & bruises and rather than play them he's keeping a few guys around who would otherwise be cut to fill out practice rosters.

The way the list was formatted didn't translate well to sort the transactions by date, but I may take a stab at it later today.

You can see the full transactions list here (as you scroll down, new data loads): https://capfriendly.com/transactions/waivers
All of those players claimed in the early part of the season had at least a half a season of previous NHL experience except for Frk. He only played 2 games for Carolina before being put back on waivers and being reclaimed by Detroit.

I could see MTL claiming Poirier (assuming he's placed on waivers). IIRC they wanted to draft him, but we grabbed him just before them.

Burke also mentioned when he was with the Ducks, they wanted to draft him as well. Considering the Ducks' farm play in our AHL division, they probably have a better scouting report on Poirier than MTL. If anyone's going to claim Poirier, it's them.

The 16-17 season opened on October 12, 2016. I counted training camp and early season transactions as being from September 30, 2016 (first day of waiver activity) and October 31, 2016 (end of the first calendar month of the season).
225 players were placed on waivers, with 1 player being placed on unconditional waivers. Of those, 216 cleared waivers. So 9 out of 226 players were claimed, which is just a shade under 4%.
So proportionately, fewer claims were made on waived players in training camp/early season.

They have to make space for hudon, they wouldn't claim a worse player instead.
