Default Is the 70's-80's sound coming back?

Movies like guardians of the galaxy(1 and 2) feature great old music from artists of the 70's-80's, the new Volkswagen Tiguan commercial features "the livin' thing" by ELO and plenty more seem to be using aged music these days.

Is it coming back? I hope so, 70's especially was an amazing decade for tunes, every style had it's hits.

The SheepDogs are a band that has a heavy 70's sound.

At least to my untrained ear.

If you like the 80s synth sound there is a whole lot of great music available, mostly on spotify, but my favorite is by far The Midnight

There are always plenty of bands that look back to the 70s and 80s. I can't say whether it is a specific popular movement now.

Some new records I reviewed this week with the throwback sound:

80s

70s

I think you posted this band in the Stranger Things thread way back and I was immediately hooked. They are amazing. Tons of other good stuff on this Youtube channel https://www.youtube.com/user/NewRetroWave

70's music is incredibly diverse as you have disco, Reggie, R&B, various types of rock, heavy metal, folk, electronic music, etc. You can argue it's the most creative and influential music decade as a lot of the late 70's music heavily influenced the 80's which is another creative decade. I have to admit I'm listening to more 70's, 80's, and to a lesser extent 90's music now not just because I'm middle aged but because today's music is generally poor in comparison and I just like good music. I never really grew up listening to 70's music because it was a bit before my time but I listen to more of it now than I did in the 80's.

Considering the popularity of 70s and 80s style music on sites like Bandcamp, I would say it's safe to say that they are definitely back.

The Preatures are a great band, with some really catchy tunes, but they may be the most mis-marketed band in the world.

The editing in that video is seizure inducing, the direction has no direction, and they don't take advantage of the singers Debbie Harry vibe at all.

I think the zeitgeist of past times come and go like cycles. About 15 to 20 years ago, there seemed to be a real trend of 70s power pop (Big Star, Cheap Trick, Badfinger, etc) coming back. There was the New Pornographers, Sloan (particularly the Between the Bridges album), The Figgs, Supergrass, The Flashing Lights, Fountains of Wayne, that theme song to The 70s Show, etc. And then there was the freak folk (Devendra Banhart, CocoRose, Joanna Newsom, Akron/Family, etc.) trend five to ten years ago. We probably won't know if this current trend has legs until 5 or 10 years down the road.

I've been listening to Zombi lately. They are heavily influenced by the synth-heavy soundtracks of 70s and 80s movies like the ones from Dario Argento and John Carpenter.

I stumbled across some ELO two or so years ago while cruising on youtube looking for some new music - I had forgotten how much I used to like them back in the day.

the other cool thing about some of this music is that there are usually funkified remixes of many of these songs - if you like that sort of thing.

Found these guys on the RetroNewWave channel on YouTube.

Love Days of Thunder, Kick Drums and Red Wine, Gloria, and Vampires.

Check out FM-84 for another great band with amazing 80's sound. "Running in the Night" sounds like it's right out of 1984.

Also check out Dynatron for some great 80's instrumental New Wave!

These things do come in cycles. I know across the pond in the 90s, disco music made a big comeback with many British and French dance tracks sampling old disco tunes, pop bands covering Bee Gees songs and even platforms and bell bottoms becoming popular again in the clubs.

Not sure about 70s rock making a comeback now, but 80s synth music definitely is as Thor mentioned. My youtube recommendations are full of synthwave tracks. It's what I'm listening to most lately. I believe it started with the Drive soundtrack, then Stranger Things and now it's starting to explode. Lots of neon showing up in movies/music videos too.

God damn it, my wife would love those bands, I should let her know. Of course then I have to listen to them.

Tuff decision.

In music terms the 70s started about 1965.

Synth is a weird phenomenon in music. Musicians who use it obviously like it, but most musicians despise it where as listeners tend to like the airy, overwhelming sound it uses to cut through or even drive a song.

To me that sound just comes off so vapid and grocery store/elevator-ish, like there isn't much going into making it. Even this song posted just seems to drag on like it's just kind of there, meant for grocery store isles.

I understand ultimately music is for the listeners, but I'm kind of glad my age allowed for my music listening to start after this stuff went out of the mainstream.

I look to someone like Jan Hammer, who made a career out of instrumental synth. I find it to be quiet exquisite and motivational. The sound makes it emotional, even if no one is singing.

It's the only music I can listen to while I'm writing. Everything else is too distracting for some reason.

I think synth can work, but it sounds better when used by talented bands to compliment top notch music writing. The 80's phenomenon saw a lot of average bands use it by just basically holding their fingers down on the chords and allowing the simple, overwhelming sound to take over.

Van Halen is probably the best example of synth complimenting or even driving songs in incredible arrangements. They were true talent, and synth lovers were so lucky Eddie decided to go that route for awhile.
