Telus did just raise the rates for Internet this month. Believe it's $5 more for each plan they have.

So we moved house a couple of months back. Had telus transfer our services. The guys installed the router in the basement and a free 5g extender on the main floor. Have internet 50 and the 5g internet is pretty good...usually hit 50mb download on tests. However the regular internet is pretty bad. Drops out quite a bit, sometimes only get 10mb download during tests. Have changed channels in the router and it doesn't make much difference. It seems to be the fact that the router is located in the basement. Installer said it would be fine. Can they move the router upstairs to the main level easily? Also I checked and the website says fibre optik is now available in my area. Is there a charge to upgrade to this? And will it make a big difference?

I am assuming you already have Telus fiber, since you are getting 50/5 (actually, it is really 50/10)

1) Run cat5 from your fiber box (the white one) to a spot on your first or second floor (if possible - see below)

2) Replace your Telus router (the black one) with almost any router from Memex. Sometimes the routers don't work properly, mine used to cut out after 30 minutes, Maybe Telus can suggest a model.

3) Connect your new router (or the crappy Telus router) in it's new location, giving you a better signal

4) If you can't get your router to work in place of the Telus router, and the wireless still sucks, disable the wireless on the Telus router and use your own router as a Wireless Access Point.

Even if you don't have your house cat5 wired, you can run a cable through a cold air return, or drill through the plate of your main floor wall to run the cable up from your basement (assuming it is unfinished in at least one spot) and put in an actual jack into the wall without much problem.

Really? I can see where it's going already...

Billionaire cable TV mogul JR Shaw was the most generously compensated executive in Calgary in fiscal 2014, capturing the pole position of plenty in the Herald’s annual survey of publicly traded firms thanks to $17.9 million in total compensation.

Which is hilarious because the majority if not all of Shaw's executives are either Shaws themselves or married to Shaws, but I'm sure they all got the positions based on merit.
