i have gone back and fourth on what i think of mony - i hated him last eyar and wanted him sent intot eh sun. then when news about the injury came out, and then read about his stats, i thought ok, maybe this will be his season.
Based on a small sample thus far this season, i am not impressed - but what do i know

I dont even know what to say.
He is badly injured at the end of every season. How many off-season surgeries has he needed in a row?
I really like Monahan, but he seems like a declining asset.

Horrible move not to sit him. Health of the player aside, you’re only devaluing the asset by not shutting him down. You do damage to the players confidence, to the players reputation with fans and other general managers by putting him through a season where he’s playing injured and stats are obviously going to be deflated.
I think many of us would have way less questions about Monahan if he had just been shut down last year instead of having to stare at that stat line. And arguably there’d be way less pressure on Monahan himself.

Think of the possibilities. Monahan has surgery immediately, Bennett becomes #1 or #2 C, scores 1.5 PPG for us, does not get traded, we make the playoffs, Monahan returns healthy for the playoffs, and we easily roll the Leafs and Jets. The story writes itself...

Grill me for saying this but Monahan is Brett Hull esque in the slot. Get your vaccines and let Monahan go see those doctors!

articles like these really piss me off. How is this old school "play through injuries" BS still a thing in today's game? If a player is injured and needs surgery, let him have the surgery. Hardly rocket-science. But nooooo, let's play guys who can barely walk. And then the league wonders why it has a painkiller problem ...

Exactly. It was a stupid season, they should have shut him down immediately.
They were playing for nothing.

If it's the Stanley Cup finals, I can see it.
But I'm pretty sure Monahan player through injuries while the Flames were pretty much out of it last season (although there were games against Montreal that could have put the Flames back in the mix).

Agreed, let him heal up properly and that can take some time. The guy is a goal scorer and maybe some fans don't realize how difficult that actually is.

Taking a while to get to 5000

Statistically, yes they were very much in it. Albeit constantly chasing. But with the up and down (mostly down) way they played, zero consistency, zero urgency even after Sutter. Did anyone genuinely think this team had any chance? Honestly?
Playing to squeak in, for zero playoff revenue, and a date with Toronto who despite not being able to finish off Montreal probably would have gotten past a beatup and underachieving Flames crew.

I have long defended keeping Monahan at centre, but at this point what might be best for him is to put him on the wing, tell him to stop thinking too much about the d side for a while and start focusing on his best talents. His shot is unreal, we should be weaponizing it more. Let him regain some offensive confidence on the wing for a while.

That might be the fan POV but do you really think that was Sutter's mindset? Or the teams?

If they were being honest with themselves it should have been.
Heck, sitting a few injured players and injecting some youth or healthy bodies may have actually helped their cause if that was what they were shooting for.

Then you don't go and hire Darryl Sutter.

I think your phone autocorrected and you meant to say "they were out of it after a month". Regardless of the "were they out?" debate, I would posit Monahan was below replacement level, so not only would early surgery have been good for the individual, it would have been good for the team, and, perhaps, Bennett emerges here instead of South Beach. I firmly believe that NHL teams are mostly run by idiots who are stuck in an outdated, incestuous way of doing things - "well, this is the way he have done things since Dick Clapper!"

I have mixed thoughts on the subject:
- On one hand, I don't like to play doctor. I don't know how they assessed if they should shut him down or not. So I think there's a lot of poorly informed assumptions being made.
- On the other hand, I think that a problem with hockey culture is that the idea of playing hurt is something held up as being admirable. And that breeds this type of thing. And I don't think it is exclusively a team or player thing. As much as the Flames wanted for him to keep playing, I bet he also wanted to. Again - it's a problem with the entire culture and approach.
