Default Dual Channel RAM

So there is a deal at memory express for $20 for 8GB, but it's 2x4GB sticks. Dual Channel. Here is the deal.

So, if I put both sticks in the back slot it would still be 8GB right? Or do I need to put 1 in the back slot and 1 in the front?

Usually depends on your motherboard, different boards can have different ram configurations.

Performance gains/penalties associated with the number of memory channels is grossly overstated - in most cases you'll get better performance from having more RAM, than from any loss of efficiency from not using an optimal number of memory channels. Any unallocated RAM in modern operating systems gets used for code and disk caching, which improves performance of the absolute slowest part of the system - the disk.

Only possible exception to this is if you are using an integrated graphics controller that uses main system memory for the video buffer, in which case you will take a hit on graphics performance if your memory is not laid out optimally.

What do you currently have right now? Honestly, no regular user is going to need more than 8GB of ram. If you have something like 4 or 6GB right now, that is probably fine. Monitor your memory usage in task manager. If you never max it out, there is no need for more ram.

Or for $20, buy this set and place it in slot 1 and slot 3 for optimal dual channel configuration (but as earlier said, it's not a big deal). Put aside or sell your old ram. 8GB will be enough for you.

I max it out constantly, that's why I want to get more.

How much ram do you currently have?

4GB and at minimum I'm always running 35% capacity in use without any programs running. Once I start iTunes, Chrome and some other stuff it usually hovers at 50%. If I want to tax it I can max it to 98% fairly easily and my computer starts to suffer.
