it makes sense. He has an insanely inflated ego, his quality on the pitch has regressed dramatically and he was still asking for ridiculous wages ... no club in Europe was going to touch that. So if you have to go into football exile, you might as well squeeze out very penny you can. In Saudi Arabia, he'll also still be treated like a king and he'll love that. It's a much more fitting end to his career at the top level than him accepting a part-time role and being a team player.

Meh, no different from any of those players back when going to play in China or Asia (Del Piero, any number of Brazilians), or even MLS (Beckham, Rooney) as opposed to a part time player or on a ####e club.

Saudi's just have more money to play with, and see throwing it around on sport (see Golf, LIV) as the latest and greatest bang for the buck for getting worldwide notoriety.

There is chatter in the industry that Ronaldo was frustrated over events in the summer when his desire to leave Old Trafford for a Champions League team went unfulfilled.

Champions League teams turned down the chance to take Ronaldo for as little as £80,000 per week, with United willing to subsidise the rest of his salary to facilitate a departure in the last window.

In the circumstances, Mendes advised Ronaldo to stay at United, accept his role in Erik ten Hag’s squad and prove his talent on the pitch when called upon. A good season might have brought Champions League teams to the table next summer, or even seen United trigger the one-year extension in his contract.

Ronaldo could have performed a useful if not integral role under Ten Hag and the United manager tried to persuade him of this. Regufe also advocated that Ronaldo fight for his place at Old Trafford.

But Ronaldo’s mind was made up and there have been suggestions he took the initiative. An agent, who doesn’t work for Ronaldo and wished to stay anonymous to protect their relationships, told The Athletic that the 37-year-old called at least one European club executive himself to talk about the prospect of joining. A representative for Ronaldo denied he made direct contact with anybody in club hierarchies.

Gareth Bale has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 33.

Bale played his final game at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in Wales' last group stage match, against England.

The last club match in his career came for Major League Soccer club LAFC. He helped them win MLS Cup last season.

"After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from club and international football," Bale said in a statement on Monday.

I'm surprised he retired from his Club too, I dont know how much longer he had on his contract, but that comes out of left field.

A World Cup appearance was probably just on his checklist for his country as his last marker. No guarantees they'd make it in four years anyways. Dude made his money and left his legacy.
