CP Game of the Year 2019
It's that time of year again, the time for the CP brain-trust to come together and decide on our Game of the Year. It was a bit of a divisive year with no real standout, so I'm sure we'll have a close competition and some interesting results!
Here is how it works:
List (a maximum) of your top 5 games (in order)
That's all! Your number one ranked game will count for 5 points, your number two for 4 points, and so on. Can't think of 5 games you played? That's alright, even if you only have one or two, list them and get those points out there! At the end of December, the game with the most total points will be crowned CP GOTY.
Just a couple rules for your selection:
1. Games must have been released within the calendar year of 2019.
2. Games can be a remake but can not be a remaster or re-release. So, Resident Evil 2 is good to go, World of Warcraft Classic is not.
3. Full expansions do count but DLC packs do not.
I'll post my own list in a separate post later and update the standings every couple days. Have fun! As a reminder, here's our previous selections since we started doing this:
2018: Red Dead Redemption 2
2017: The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
2016: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End
2019 Game of the Year Standings

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice
Apex Legends
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
The last two are more or less on the list because they were some of the only new games I played, not because they were particularly remarkable. I didn't include dauntless, because the only fun thing about it was that it was free.

The Outer Worlds
Outer Wilds
Gris
Control (though I never finished it)
Untitled Goose Game
Games I'd probably nominate but still playing: Borderlands 3, Fallen Order
Game I'd nominate though I haven't even bought it yet: Pokemon Sword/Shield

Overall I feel like this year was pretty underwhelming compared to last year. Plus I just honestly haven't played a lot of non-Switch games this year. So based on that:
Luigi's Mansion 3 - This game had the most character and charm of any game I'd played this year. Maybe not the best gameplay but I just found it to be my most enjoyable game of the year, due to the charm of the characters.
Apex Legends - IMO Respawn is the best shooter developer out there right now and like the chance they took with Apex
Fire Emblem - Three Houses - The best Harry Potter game ever made without the Harry Potter license
LoZ - Link's Awakening - Similar to Luigi's Mansion 3 in that the game just has so much character and charm. Sadly performance issues held it back from being even better.
Mario Maker 2 - Nintendo kind of rushed it out with little hype (should have been a holiday title IMO) but still the amount of options, features, and replay-ability of this title make it one of the best of the year.
Games that probably deserve a vote but that I probably won't play: The Outer Worlds, Resident Evil 2, Sekiro
Games that probably would be in my top 5 if I had played them yet: Jedi Fallen Order

I get the feeling that the correct answer is Disco Elysium, but I've barely started playing it, so I'll have to just put my vote towards The Outer Worlds.

The Outer Worlds
Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order
Days Gone
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (I hate the multiplayer more than I've ever hated a Call of Duty multiplayer, but that campaign was good enough to get a spot on here)

I think the only new game in 2019 I played was The Outer Worlds, and I got bored of it really fast

I haven't played many of the titles that are normally mentioned in the game of the year, either because they are on systems I don't own or are not my type of games.
So for me:
1. Death Stranding

I'm just finishing up The Outer Worlds and moving to Star Wars: JFO so not ready yet as it's still up for grabs as I would say this is one of those years with some good games but none truly great.

I think that's pretty old. I remember playing it years ago

The Outer Worlds
Resident Evil 2
Gears 5
Days Gone
I can't think of a 5th right now. All of the other 2019 games I've played that I can think of I've barely touched.

It was in early access for awhile but it got an official release in April, but I get what you’re saying and that’s why I only gave it honourable mention.

Oh I didn't realize it was in Early Acces before. That makes more sense

This thread always reminds me that I'm slow to play AAA titles. Usually I'm a year or two behind for the most part. Anyways:
1. Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers
2. Tetris 99
3. Slay The Spire
4. Super Mario Maker 2
5. Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair
