Oilers stock up for playoffs, Sabres stock up for draft
The Buffalo Sabres have traded Nate Schmidt, Jakob Silfverberg and their 2021 1st round pick to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for their 2020 1st round pick (yes, Buffalo's 1st), Ilya Kovalchuk and Derek Forbort. The Sabres also sent 6.5 million in cheese to the Oilers in order to facilitate this trade.
The Sabres wanted their 1st back as they are out of a playoff spot, and while us Oilers didn't think we'd ever trade this pick, we determined that if we're serious about making a run this year that we should acquire some pieces in order to help us do so. Our 2nd line has struggled this season and Silfverberg is the perfect two way player to replace Kovalchuk on that line, as he will play both on the powerplay and penalty kill. Schmidt helps solidify the defensive corps and will play in the top 4. Getting a 1st back next year in order to keep the youth bright. Forbort was solid for us but was going to be out of the lineup with Schmidt in and Kovy was going to be in the bottom six with the addition of Silfverberg, and we don't feel he's suited to play in a role like that.
