It is hard to imagine the 11th place Calgary Flames who are only 5 points out of the playoffs at next years TDL not being buyers at the deadline.

Unless Gio asks to be traded to a contender, I suspect he'll retire at the end of next year, playing all of his NHL games as a Calgary Flame.
I'm not really upset with that either. Yes, it sucks to not cash in on getting value for a player about to leave the team or league. However, every player retires at some point, thus making every team "stuck" with not trading away a player to get something for him. I would be fine if Gio was one of the guys we are stuck with.

Stajan was saying Gio just talking about winning a cup now. So a trade to a contender would probably sit OK with him. Is Toronto a contender? Their path will never be easier. It would be a dream come true for him to win a cup with the Leafs.

I used to feel that way, but player/team loyalty is becoming less and less of a thing.
I think if there's a player that has been foundational to a team's success (core part of all those contending years, or those cup runs) that's one thing, but outside of iginla/kipper, I just don't think the flames must partake in that level of admiration and respect for anyone over the last decade, Giordano included (whom I love as a flame and everything he stands for).
Also, in my opinion, this team can't afford to be touchy/feely about their decisions at this point. Shrewd asset management is required, otherwise the odds of a bad few seasons becoming a bad decade increase exponentially.
To the point of "GioforPM" above, this isn't about dumping Giordano off either. This is likely a symbiotic move where he also gets a far better chance to make a run at a cup or 2 before calling it a career.

The Gio / Brodie pairing reunited and wins a cup with the Leafs. Never thought I'd see that ever being possible.

I think it's almost a certainty Gio is traded at the deadline
Gio retained to Toronto just makes too much sense.

It would join the bittersweet moments of ex Flames hoisting the cup.
Ference, Sutter, Regehr, Bouwmeester, etc

Id be happy for Gio. He's not going to see a cup here, that's for damn sure.
I would take any of:
Amirov
Sandin
Liljegren
Anderson
Ovechinnikov
Straight across. I would offer max salary retention for 2 of them.

Gross. As a flames living in the Toronto area, I don't think I could stomach that.

Gio with 50% retained to Toronto just makes too much sense IMO.
Cup Contender - Check
Hometown Team - Check
Reunite with BFF Brodie - Check
Toronto has need for D-man - Check
Giordano (50% retained)
for
Kerfoot
Liljegren (or maybe Robertson)
I'd hate to see Gio get traded, but honestly this deal just makes a lot of sense right now.

That's an awful deal for Toronto
Right now Nylander is a much better player than Johnny. So they give up him plus a bunch of additional riches?

Well said. I would love to see Gio end his career as a Flame but taking heart out of it if we can get good value for him, we have to take it

You might be right but how would Nylander be doing playing with Ritchie and Monahan?

Gaudreau (50% retained), Giordano (50% retained), Rittich (50% retained)
Total Cap: $8.125M
for
Andersen, Kerfoot, Roberston, Amirov, 1st, 2nd
Total Cap: $8.5M
...I don't see Toronto going after Johnny, although he may help fix their PP.

Excuses.
Johnny has played awful.
When do we stop giving him excuses?

The last few proposals are again reasons why people need to temper their expectations on what the Flames are going to get if they trade Johnny, Gio, or both.

My only actual hope is that it is for "futures". A pick, a prospect...whatever. I just very much do not want to see a "hockey" trade.
