If scuttlebutt is to be believed, Pittsburgh is going to throw a ridiculous offer at him.

They already gave a stupid contract to Brandon. Maybe they need Chris on a stupid contract to complete the set and summon Exodia.

Pretty much, I guess.

So glad OEL isn't an option for the Flames. Best news in days. There's an Athletic article about him and it's generally not pretty for comparable defensemen at his age that start declining.

He's a 29 year old right wing, right shot.
Has scored 132 with New Jersey in 5 years (30 goal pace per 82 games).
Only signed for one more year at $4.65M, expiring as a UFA. So the cost may not be too high and there's no long-term commitment to worry about.

Palmieri is exactly the type of player the Flames need. Offensive yet with grit/jam.
Drawback is 1 year remaining.

Because he'll probably cost a 1st round pick, he'll be 30 in February, and only has 1 year left on his deal.

A Palmieri package for Hanifin? Maybe. Depends on the fringes of the deal.

Honestly you probably shouldn't keep any of them anyways. (Maybe just Markstrom)
Pettersson and Hughes are going to cost $16-18M in one years time.

That sounds like a horrible, horrible idea. Palmieri is a year away from being the James Neal of his UFA class.
Hanifin just turned 23 and is on a great contract. I have less than zero desire to trade him for stop-gaps.

Hanifin is 6 years younger and plays the more important position. I'd want a 1st round pick coming with Palmieri for that deal - otherwise, just no - especially because Palmieri is 1 season away from a contract that will likely hit 7M.

Don’t want to give up assets for one year of a player that would want a premium to stay in Calgary and become overpaid.
He is not going to be cheap and not worth the price long term

I'm in for a classic "Al Coates Something Now Something Later" deal.
Hanifin for Pelmieri+1st.
Though I'm not someone generally advocating for Hanifin to be dealt at all.
I'd like to see what a Andersson-Hanifin pairing does for a full year.

But we don't even know what the cost would be.
If he's viewed as a 1 year rental, it could absolutely be worth it if the price wasn't ridiculous.

Even with the 1st I still don't love the deal, but would be okay with it. It is a position of need for New Jersey - and they do have extra 1st round picks which are apparently in play (and we know Tree has previously had trade talks with New Jersey including Hanifin). Noah Hanifin is one of those players who I feel struggles elevating his intensity, but I also used to think that about Backlund and I think we're seeing that change with Backs.
...and the chances of adding a Perreault/Zary/Amirov/Bourque/Quinn alongside Palmieri would certainly be a neat twist - but we'd need to extend Palmieri and that contract may be pretty dang pricey. Also, does he have some established chemistry with Hall?

Dicklund has no cred. Just a great name. Nothing to see here.
