Is 28 Vs. 31 a big difference? Does the fact that Dubnyk had only played 170’ish games at that stage? Hadn’t ever really established himself as anything in Edmonton, played 170 or so games, and was then moved.

Pretty good example - I’d argue it a bit from the perspective that Talbot wasn’t very good for us (hence why we’re connected to every other goalie out there this season).

Well unless we draft and develop our own guy, nobody’s trading us a 27 year old dude with five consecutive .920 seasons.
When the Avalanche got Patrick Roy, he was mired in the midst of four straight seasons where his save percentage was between .906 and .909.
He needed a new challenge, and he won two more cups.
Holtby may not be Roy, but he’s closer to Roy than he is to Markstrom, that’s for damn sure.
Again, I’m fine with Markstrom. What’s important is we get a guy.
If the guy we get is Braden Holtby, that’s an enormous win for the Calgary Flames.

Goalies leaving Edmonton don't really count. We're talking about the most pathetic franchise in modern professional sports (maybe tied with the Browns), the only way to go is up after leaving that cesspool.
Edit: "Holtby may not be Roy", glad we can agree on something.

I think I prefer Markstrom to Holtby, I just see more positive momentum there and maybe that’s something we can ride the high of.
If we lose out on Markstrom and sign Holtby? Well, I’d be okay with that too as I’m relatively confident in his ability to bounce back.

I hope Holtby goes to Edmonton...the guy is going to be an absolute disaster

Off the top of my head:
Kiprusoff leaving Sam Jose for Calgary.
Roy leaving Montreal for Colorado.
Marc Andre Fleury to Vegas.
Mike Smith leaving Tampa to go to Arizona.
Craig Anderson was done in Colorado before Ottawa saved his career.
Ed Belfour leaving San Jose for Dallas.
Goalies don’t go wire to wire with a single team. And the ones that are good don’t just stop being good for no reason.
Corey Schneider would be good if he had two working hips. He doesn’t. So he’s done.

Patrick Roy never once had a season where he had a negative GSAA, including those 3 years before he was traded.
I feel like we have a double agent in here trying to make Braden Holtby sound like some sort of God knowing full well he's likely to provide very poor results while someone like Markstrom (not the biggest fan but the best goalie on the market) has performed much better in recent seasons.
The only argument for Holtby is that whereas Markstrom will likely get term which a team could end up semi-regretting, Holtby is more likely to get a short term "show me" deal with the off chance he bounces back. However, there is almost zeeero chance he goes from being one of the worst goalies in the entire league over the last three years to going back to being one of the best.
Markstrom is easily the better target over Holtby.

I think the site you looked at has 3 rows for 1995-96, a total row, a Montreal row and a Colorado row, because Roy only had 2 seasons under .910 in that time, the year of the trade and the year before it. They were sandwiched with a .918 before and .923 after

He did, actually.
.916 in 33 starts
.914 in 42 starts
.920 in 37 starts.
Dubnyk had a bad 30 games, went on his trip to purgatory, and emerged reborn in St Paul, where he was one of the better goalies of the decade.

Before I head into the list, let's just point out Holtby's career so far. He transitioned from a stud backup goalie into a vezina-caliber goalie for 3-4 years before falling off a cliff and being one of the worst goalies in the NHL over the last 3 seasons. As a starter in 7 seasons (playing more than half the team's games), Holtby has had 2 seasons in which he was average, 3 seasons in which he was incredible (his 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years as a starter) and 2 seasons in which he was terrible (his 5th and 7th years as a starter).
Kipper was a career backup before being traded. Not comparable.
Roy never once had a season in his entire career in which he had a negative GSAA and wasn't an above-average goalie. Not comparable.
Fleury's last season in Pittsburgh was slightly below average, but the 4 seasons prior were above average. Then, he had an incredible run with the cinderella story of the year, followed by having a decent season and then a very bad season this year. He's now a cap dump. Not comparable.
Smith had one absolutely insane year in which he should've won the Vezina after going to Arizona, but before that he was never a spectacular goalie and bounced between average and horrible seasons after his one year. Not comparable.
Anderson really only had one bad season as a starter prior to these last 3 seasons. He's always been a pretty good goalie. Not comparable.
Belfour is really the only one with any sort of argument to be had for him.
