Brad Treliving made it clear - a trade is coming to make room for his Flames RFAs. @StellickSimmer @GordStellick @SiriusXMNHL When and whom?
Because I'm a Flames fan and just expect to have the worst happen, I'm half expecting the Flames to clear cap from the defence and graduate Andersson, Valimaki and Kylington at the expense of depth. Then have the D decimated by injuries next season.

I wonder if Tree is a bit pissed off about negotiating two different trades that have both fallen apart at the last minute.
Could he not have resolved the Kadri NTC issue earlier in the negotiation process? If he didn’t, that would be a Jay Feaster move for which he has only himself to blame.

Treliving makes depth on defense a big priority. Look at last season with acquiring Fantenberg when we had Stone/Prout/Kylington/Valimaki.
There’s no way he ever decimates the depth on defense. He’s a former defense man. He usually acquires more dmen than people want, not less.
Justin Braun return for Brodie looking pretty good right now.
The Zucker deal fell apart with minutes left before the deadline apparently.
Sometimes getting a deal done takes priority over getting full value. It sucks that Kadri mixed a deal but I feel like that is maybe something that should've been established from the outset.
If the rumours that Zucker said no are true, that's another one where maybe that should've been established from the outset.
I have no idea how these discussions go down, but it seems to me at this point it's going to be difficult to improve the roster for this year because of the cap restrictions.
Tre was able to pull off a blockbuster last summer that reversed course to a large degree, I hope he's got another one in the wings here.

Getting player approval before working the deal with the team sounds like cart before the horse. no sense getting player approval if cannot work the deal out with the team.
likely team does not want to ask player until they have a deal in place either.

I do think the big thing is this year big RFA crop is holding things up a bit, as teams are waiting to see if they might want to jump on a trade if contracts turn south.
Lots of team's still have space though - including a couple with playoff aspirations.
St.Louis - 19 players signed - $14M in cap room
Columbus - 20 players signed - $17M in cap room
New Jersey - 16 players signed - $21M in cap room
Winnipeg - 15 players signed - $23M in cap room
Colorado - 18 players signed - $27M in cap room
If were being honest as a millionaire 20 - 30 year old pro athlete, why on earth would you pick any of those cities if the contract and opportunity were equal to an offer to play anywhere else?
So yes, Tre should always try to figured out if player X would waive to come to Calgary before he ventures down that path.

He's been with the organization through a lot of ####ty years, probably gave up some money over the life of his contract to make sure he stayed put, played well last season and helped Giordano have his best season ever.
Now he's looking at being traded away from a great situation and opportunity, not because of anything he's done, but because the GM made a couple of big mistakes.
I'd be pretty pissed frankly if I was going to be traded from the team I'd spent 7 years with because James Neal just showed up and is getting paid more than I am and can't play hockey anymore.

Whatever. It's a business. Players know the game the second they decide to get an agent and go for it. Not every player is going to get drafted and play for that team their entire careers. If a player/team negotiate a salary and it's less than what he wanted/couldve gotten, that's on the player/agent, not on the team.
People need to take the feelings of players out of the equation. They are commodities that have value. You need value to trade to invest in more value.

There are two approaches to asking a player to waive a NTC.
1. You can ask them whenever a team expresses interest if they are willing to waive.
2. You can ask them to waive once a trade is worked out and all that is required is the player's approval.
Approach 1 only makes sense if the player has asked for a trade or the team is 100% sure they are moving the player.
GMs do 2 if they aren't completely sure if they are moving out the player or have multiple trade scenarios in play. No need to bother the player and potentially rattle or even damage relationships until the GM is ready to proceed.
