Backlund should have an A. Brouwer should not.
Neal has worn an A for the last two Western Conference champions, so you'd have to think he'll get consideration.
I wouldn't be surprised if they go to a home/road split like they had a few years ago.

Backlund and Hamonic make sense to me. Neal as well, though I always think the 'new guy' should at least get a year in before giving him a letter, but that's just me. I love Tkachuk and his game, but he is still young.

I think Backlund definitely deserves an A and should get Brouwer's A.
I doubt they will remove the A from Monahan.

Neal will get an A. Hasn't he worn one in all of his last 4 stops?

Brouwer shouldn't even have a jersey on this team, let alone a letter.

I'd go Gio, Monahan, Hamonic and probably Backlund.
That said, I know Backlund was captain at the worlds' but maybe he hasn't even wanted a letter here. Maybe he's not comfortable in leadership.
I think Brouwer got it because of experience but also because the guys like him. It's trickier to take it from him than lots of fans assume, but I guess it needs to be done. A change of coaches gives the opportunity I guess.
I don't really see Neal, because he's new but otherwise, I'd be OK. I don't see Tkachuk - he's too edgy and smartassish to be the guy to talk to refs. I don't think Gaudreau is suited. Brodie may be, but if he and Gio play together it's a waste of time.
I've always like teams where the players choose or at least have a big voice in it.

I believe Brouwer got it because management and coaches brought him in partly due to his leadership. I don't think the players had a say in that one, but I may be wrong.

We don't know who are the true leadership kind in that room other than Gio and Monahan up to this point. Backlund may or may not be a good leader in an NHL room.
So speculating is rather fruitless.
One thing I do know is that your worst player should not be wearing an 'A'. Brouwer was the worst player many a night. Please remove the A from him, I don't give a heck what kind of a leader he is off the ice. He's bad on it.

Rip that A right off Brouwer’s jersey and give it to Backlund. Monahan keeps the other.

I think Neal with get an A almost guaranteed.
Perhaps splitting time with Backlund (home and away etc) like we've seen in the past.
No way Brouwer retains his A let alone his playing spot at this point.

I don't think Calgary has used player votes. It's a coach decision. The Brouwer thing shows the potential error of giving it to a new guy. It looked like a natural choice at the time - cup ring, veteran, good consistent stats.
Maybe the team should, if they aren't having player votes, at least give Gio a big say.

So if they take the A off Brouwer, does that sour the mood in the room. There were rumblings last year that he was miserable to be around because he didn't think he belonged on the 4th line, would ripping the letter make it even more toxic?
And since his NMC is over, could the flames send him down?

Smith would have an A if goalies were given letters more routinely.

I would only put the chances of him losing it at 50/50. Like I said, it's tricky to strip a letter. It's a public humiliation most teams try and avoid. And it's maybe a bigger deal to fans than the teammates. It's been done with new coaches before (Elias lost it to Langenbrunner with a new coach) but still...
One way would be to have a very secret talk with Brouwer and convince him to give it up. Or maybe another way would be to take away everyone's on the basis of the new coaching regime and then redo the whole thing. You'd probably still end up with Gio as C (almost 100% guaranteed) and Monahan. But maybe they'd be PO's and wouldn't put their names up.

Where are these rumblings from? I've never heard anything like that, quite the opposite actually.
