Not my work so I'll just post a link instead of posting the pics. Some cool long-exposure fireworks shots.

I see what he did... pulled the focus during the exposure. Clever, but I'm not sure if I prefer them to regular fireworks photos.

Looking at his site he has them under the long exposure category.

If he did the zoom/focus during exposure, would the vertical trails not have a similar effect? On some of the pics in his portfolio the launch streaks (tracer, whatever you call it) look like a long exposure shot vs zoom during exposure.

Then again I'm certainly no expert.

I don't prefer them over regular shots myself, but I thought it was a very neat technique.

Those fireworks shots are quite unique looking.

Here are a couple long exposure zooms of mine.

Yes, they are long exposures. No, he is not zooming during exposure, but he is changing the focus during the exposre.

For ones like this, the exposure starts in focus then the focus distance is moved closer, putting the fireworks out of focus and creating wider lines over time.

For ones like this, the exposure starts focused close then the focal distance is moved back to where the fireworks are. In this particular example I'm guessing he actually overshot the mark (rather than hitting focus then going back), which is why they get wider again at the tip.

There are a lot of small clouds drifting past a bright full moon right now. I was thinking an interesting silhouette in fg might be really nice.
Anyone interested in posting some pix/movies?

Went to Montana today. Pics are sparse given the opportunities along the way, but pulling off this spontaneous road trip in 1 day meant it wasn't going to be a exercise in meticulous compositions... it was more of an excuse to put some miles on the new Redneck Mobile.

Anyways...

Nope... just my crappy Tokina 11-16 (who's autofocus doesn't work anymore). No filter, no lens hood.

The water was just that clear (EDIT: That's Lake McDonald in case you're wondering)... and was lucky with the sunlight. Was harsh in most cases throughout the trip, but worked well for this setting.
... and a little Lightroom magic never hurt anyone

I know, but it's done well enough to still look good.

Montana! Wish I knew how to avoid haze for landscape shots.

Other than shooting on a different day, not mauch. You can probably do things in post-processing, but I say embrace the haze! It gives your photos 3-dimensional depth.

Yup... different day or different time of day.
The light was so harsh and crappy that of the 300+ pics I took on my trip, I think I would only show 5 or 6 to anyone.

One thing I noticed about my first summer here in Alberta is that the view of the Rockies, from Calgary, SUCKS in the summer. Can be 25+ degrees, sunny, not a could in the sky and you can't even see them some days. No fancy camera tricks are going to fix that, lol
