We grab a waiver eligible goalie who can stay in the AHL and avoid messing up the room chemistry, but jump up if required and develop with Rittich as a tandem the next few years. Also grab a scoring top six winger and a really low 3rd round pick.

We essentially give up one of our bubble goalie prospects and a high 2nd (which we would likely use to grab another bubble goalie prospect) for a quality tender. Mangiapane and 1st seems like a fair price for Toffoli. Maybe they can throw in a depth D as well.
Bubble goalie prospect my ass. I know he has had a slow start but giving Parsons to LA in a deal for Quick is just stupid. Hey, lets trade away the goalie prospect nicknamed Quick Jr by pro scouts for the broken down real Quick. That is how you kill an organization down the road. Remember when Button shuttled Giguere out of town? This would be that all over again. Gillies is an ok goalie prospect but he is not remotely on the same level ceiling wise as Parsons.

Edit: I didn't even notice Quick is not even the goalie in this deal, this is even more brutal than I thought.

The only thing to debate here is the direction they would go to make room. They aren’t trading the pieces that would be required to get Stone without signing him.
I agree. I only brought it up because I think the odds of us landing Stone are remote. There are teams who will pay a lot for a rental. I agree with you that we are not one of them.

I really don’t see him getting moved to anyone due to acquisition cost and salary projections, unless he is open to discussing contracts. Some players are, some aren’t. We aren’t privy to that info.

Ottawa heavily scouting Avs and Jets game: https://twitter.com/scottbilleck/sta...671680000?s=21

As much as I’d like to see Stone here, my money is on the Jets getting it done.

I mean, the most successful goaltenders the Flames have had recently were no name guys like Ramo, Chad Johnson to a lesser extent and now Rittich.
Ramo wasn't as good statistically as Hiller in their first year together and Johnson was worse than Elliott IMO, aside from a hot streak early in the season.

I wouldn't really call Howard a big name at this point. And the Flames have also not done well with other no-names - Berra, Ortio, McBackup, Macdonald, etc.

So are we back to blaming Sigalet yet or do we wait for a few more games?

We blame him for the ####ty goalies but we don't praise him for any goaltending success. It's the CP mandate. We are circling back around to blaming him, yes.

Mike Russo reporting that Wild GM has been given the green light by ownership to make trades even if it costs the team a playoff spot.

https://theathletic.com/818760/2019/...-zucker-staal/

Quote:
Fenton has the ability to trade members of the Wild core even if the result of the trade (or trades) costs the Wild a chance to make this year’s playoffs for a seventh consecutive season.

That doesn’t mean Fenton necessarily will push out core players. But he essentially does have the thumbs-up from the head honcho if he wants to.

That suddenly means that in addition to the prototypical pending free-agent trade-deadline rentals like Staal and Eric Fehr being on the block, Fenton — who last month dealt Nino Niederreiter to Carolina — has permission to trade core players like Charlie Coyle, Mikael Granlund, Jason Zucker and Jonas Brodin even if the result is the Wild taking a step or two back in the short-term in an attempt to get better in the long-term.

Best part about that tweet is that the Oilers have the director of salary cap at the game and Oiler fans are wondering why their cap specialist is on scouting duties

I'd take that cap hit for the next couple of years. He isn't likely to suddenly fall off a cliff and would be enough to keep us competitive and give Rittich and Parsons time get where they need to be.

This be cool too, a former and redeemed Oilers, and isn't he from Calgary?

Well, their scouting sucks, and their cap management sucks, so maybe they're flipping them and seeing if that works better. Worth a shot at this point.

I think if both teams are just drawing from picks and prospects (for our purposes, players not on the Flames or Jets), then the Jets have better picks and prospects. So I don't think Calgary could match Winnipeg's offer. But I think as soon as the actual NHL players get involved, I think it just comes down to who wants it more.

Which goaltending success was that?

Jonas Hiller, who lost his starting job halfway into the playoffs, and then proceeded to have probably the worst goaltending season of anyone in the NHL the last decade?

Karri Ramo, who needed to be sent down to the AHL to rehab his game, and was already slipping in his time back with Sigalet before an injury let the narrative stick at "Sigalet improved his game by telling him to play deeper in his net"?

David Rittich, who needed to be sent down to the AHL to rehab his game, and then needed a whole offseason away from Siggy to get off to another hot start, which now again seems to need rehab?

Chad Johnson, who basically carried this team into a playoff spot for the first half of a season before the team had some time off, which he spent working on his game with Sigalet and then proceeded to be ECHL caliber the rest of the year?

Brian Elliott, who while not following the long term downward trend of all the previous guys, still managed to finish his Flames career unable to make a routine save?

Mike Smith, who's been Swiss League caliber for over a Calendar year after a hot start?

Nik Backstrom, who played 3 games for us? Him, actually... awesome job Siggy!

Joni Ortio, who needed to be sent down to the AHL to rehab his game, finally did, and then was promptly let go at a ripe age 25?

I think the constant with most of these guys was hot starts and then finishes that are best described as terrifying.

You can chalk it up to a lack of talent or aging if you want, but I'm not getting fooled again. Whenever a goalie hits adversity under Sigalet it avalanches the wrong way instead of guys breaking a slump. He seems like a really nice guy, but his job is not to do nothing as goalies go on extended cold streaks.

The truth is this - Rittich's maybe not playing that poorly, and even Smith has his positive moments - but very, very few of us have any confidence these players can get back to the level they are capable and thus it's back to "let's make a trade".

Maybe we've never had the best goaltending in the world, but over Sigalet's tenure we've had the fourth worst 5v5 SV% so even if I am dead freakin' wrong I'd rather try something different than the ol' Definition of Insanity.

I'd totally be down for Tre trying to get Coyle and Dubnyk somehow.
