Measles outbreaks growing, a great account of the Arizona one which found stunningly health care workers not vaccinated or had no idea if they were or not.

Quote:
There’s an important dimension to this outbreak that may not be evident at first. We tend to blame parents who hold their kids back from vaccination for breaches in the wall of herd immunity. But the people who were infected in this outbreak and shared responsibility for passing it on included adult health care workers who had never been vaccinated and who had missed or declined the chance to get booster shots. By doing that, they put their unknowing patients at risk — and infected, among others, someone with brain cancer and another person living with Down syndrome.

When the hospitals checked to see who among their staff wasn’t vaccinated, they found that 30 percent didn’t know or couldn’t prove it. The two hospitals where measles patients were cared for actually did blood tests on their staff, and found that 9 percent were non-immune: never-vaccinated, never-infected. If the hospitals had not acted to identify those employees and send them home or vaccinate them, they could have hosted a roaring epidemic that might have been impossible to contain.

We can argue endlessly, and do, about people who refuse vaccination for themselves or their children. Under law, they have the right to take that risk. But what this Arizona outbreak makes clear is how many more people are forced to assume that risk without being consulted: not only the infants, elderly and immune-compromised among those 8,321 people exposed in this outbreak, but the hospital shareholders and taxpayers who paid the bill for it to be contained. Until we start counting up those costs as well, we won’t achieve an honest accounting of vaccine refusal’s true price.

Gotta love it when the stupidity of a few starts to pose serious concerns for the majority.

Frontline had a good doc on this
you can watch it online here
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/vaccines/view/

What really caught my eye was just the plain ignorance of some of these anti vaccination people.

Honestly, I think there needs to be something done to stem this. I would not be opposed to jail time for people who don't have their children vaccinated for the more serious diseases (i.e. Measles).

I could see that being a little tough to push through.

I guess an alternative would be to withhold healthcare/services if you chose to not vaccinate but your kid ends up getting sick. Or to still offer the services but force them to fully pay for it out of pocket - it is, afterall, their choice.

The solution is simple: If they don't get vaccinated, simply hose them down with some polio viruses in solution.

Hmmm, this would be the perfect go if you want to Darwin a large portion of the population the their descendents if you picked up something like measles. Natural Selection in action.

Measles outbreak spreads to Quebec.

Quote:
The return of measles: Where did we go wrong?

In recent weeks, there have been more than 250 cases of the dreadful childhood disease in Quebec. The outbreak was sparked by vacationers returning from France, which is in the midst of a measles epidemic, as is Britain.

The Genetics of Autism
http://theness.com/neurologicablog/i...s-of-autism-2/

ASD is a complex disorder but researcher are slowly unraveling the changes in the brain that correlate with and cause the features of ASD. Further, research into the genetics of ASD is progressing rapidly and producing highly significant results.

We are still far from fulling explaining the genetic or neuroanatomy and physiology of ASD – but the utility of a scientific theory is better understood by how well the research is progressing, rather than how far we have already come. The fact that the genetic theory of autism is producing such useful results speaks to the power of this theory. This, of course, does not rule out environmental effects playing a role. Genes evolve to respond to the environment, and increasingly scientists are identifying important epigenetic factors in disease. But the research to date suggests a highly dominant role for genetics in autism, and this recent research adds to the growing body of research supporting this.

The question about knowing when it's your turn to speak on the phone made me question some of my friend's ratings though...

26 - definitely not Autism, but I've got some kind of mild to moderate social anxiety disorder based on my answers. (But I already knew that)

I did this text about six months ago and scored something in the 34+ category (something like 38 I think).

This time I scored 20.

Then again, I'm a diagnosed bipolar. On some days I'd propably score even lower
