Yup Monahan already chasing and then all of a sudden he decides it’s a good idea to chase.
Still a bit unlucky as Monahan got back to get a stick in but laine has such a good release he was able to find the puck and rifle it
Momentum changed on that horrible play by Lucic though, just turned the entire game and a ridiculous move by Ward to start the 4th line.

Is Monahan a problem?

Is the combo a problem?

Yup - huge one point.
No exhibitions, this was destined to be a friggin' rollercoaster ride.
I was really happy in the first though! Usually openers bring me no joy.

Need the next two wins against Vancouver, or the five day break afterwards will become unbearable.

Looks like more of the same to me. Mediocre team getting out worked and chasing the puck all night. Terrible at face offs, terrible at puck possession.
Meh.

I would have vastly preferred they spent the Tanev money on an elite coach.

Going to be a broken record a lot of times this year I think, but........the Flames need their best players to be their best players to win. Markstrom was good, the defense as a whole was fine, Tanev was good, the forwards were hit and miss after the first.
But.......once again.........they need Gaudreau and Monahan to be beasts offensively. It's getting old to say it, but they just don't do it nearly enough. They need to step up.

How about do we have a coach with enough balls to split them up?

Considering half the goals, and all of the 5 on 5 goals, were against the 4th line, I think everyone else was fine.

Mangiapane-Backlund-Bennett look good as a line. Ryan steadied the 4th line pretty well. Tkachuk had a rough 2nd + 3rd, lots of fumbling the puck and no-look passes to no one. Gaudreau and Monahan still need a babysitter and Leivo probably ain't it. Markstrom looks solid. I liked Tanev, Nesterov looked solid, Valimaki's got a lot of poise with the puck.
Lot of potential but lots of kinks to iron out. I worry this is going to be a repeat of last year's solid team with a complete no-show from the top line, and we have to disassemble the rest of the roster to get Gaudreau and Monahan going.

I actually liked them better than in both of their playoffs tonight. Come at me.

Frankly, I wasn't expecting a win today anyhow.
Flames really, really need to figure out why just playing one period of three is bad and FIX IT.
At least we got a point, though.

Overall happy with most of the team.
First period they looked amazing, a stupid play by Lucic and weak call 5-3 made the Jets push back too easy.

After watching 3 or 4 of these season starting games, I dont think that a lot of the problems we saw were out of the ordinary.
Puttin near every game was sloppy as hell.

I hate to say it but I think we also need a new #1 d to emerge. Maybe andersson but only saw flashes of it tonight, he's not there yet.
I thought Monahan and gaudreau were mostly good. Didn't feel leivo added much to the duo though. Ditto dube beside lindy-tkachuk. Need to juggle the rws. 4th line was very bad.
