Raises…
Meh I know, we should all be thankful to have jobs now a days but let’s talk maybe pre Covid days and or industries not impacted.
You get promoted to a dept management position after slaving pretty hard
(Having to work and now people manage in heavy stress contracts negotiation position which I didn’t have to before) in a position you were already doing above and beyond your normal job description by a mile in a non management position … what increase percentage would you expect?
I got offered 4.5 percent increase in salary and position in a non COVID impacted industry just now and I’m livid to be honest. Beat some sense into me and or let me know what you think a reasonable percentage would be.

Is this the raise from your old job to new management job? Or an annual raise on top of that?

Raise comes from a promotion to a new management job.

There are a bunch of factors we don’t know but with no other context, that seems crazy low.

That’s not a raise. That’s working more and getting paid for it. Don’t let anyone convince you that should even factor into the hourly rate discussion, because it’s a different thing entirely.

For a promotion (not a lateral move), anywhere from a 15-50% increase is reasonable depending on how much of a seniority jump the new position is and the duties of the new role. An offer of 4.5% is ridiculously low and would have me seriously considering declining the offer over such a paltry increase in compensation if the new job had much greater responsibilities.

Management is not what you used to do.
You used to be productive, now you make sure the producers stay motivated. Edit: plus acting as a human BS shield to prevent BS raising from the lower ranks to your manager/boss.
You’re a babysitter that is partially paid in ego strokes.
Enjoy your demotion and real pay decrease.

Look at it this way:
1) Do you really want this promotion because it will be more interesting work than what you do now? If yes, take the raise and do the job. More raises will come with better times, probably.
2) Do you like your current job? Would the new responsibilities and headaches make the promotion without a lot more money questionable? If yes, tell your boss that you don't want the promotion and that you enojy what you're doing now. See if they offer you a lot more money than 4.5%.

I just went through this earlier this year. I was given a lead position but they didn't even ask or talk to me about the raise, they just decided 6% was enough. After a month (and also finding out about company defined pay ranges which I was well below) I told them either bring me up in to the expected range or drop me back to senior since the raise was not worth the extra headaches.
The actual raise was more like 33% once they agreed, so yeah, if it's a large increase in responsibility and headaches, and you're not going to use the new title to go find another job in the near future, I would not take it.

That’s a tough situation you’re in.
Normally companies reward the people they are promoting with higher salaries, which means a nice raise.
They haven’t in your case-perhaps you were paid above your previous role, or perhaps your boss is clueless, or the company is cheap.
I would personally search for average salaries for your new role online (ideally for the city you are in) and see where you sit. Use this info to justify a different rate in the new role.
If your employers don’t budge, then I’d do your role for 6 months, acting like an ideal employee and learning all you can, and then start looking for a new job. The fact that you’ve been recently promoted is a good indicator for other companies who will pay you market rates for that role.
Good luck.

If you were working those hours anyways and work load didn’t change that’s a raise, if you weren’t already working 40 it’s not.
Do you have a professional organization that publishes pay guides? That’s a good metric to see if you are paid fairly.
If the title/experience is better and managing people is what you want to and in 6 months go shopping for a new role to be paid properly. Jobs are like cable companies, if your goal is to maximize salary you need to move every few years. Now if you like the company and management you can stay longer but in general it’s at the expense of salary.
Moving from 0 reports to multiple I would expect 10-25%

If you aren’t getting annual inflation bumps, then you are taking annual pay cuts.

Are you mainly salary or is salary just part of your compensation structure? For my job management level changes are generally a 10% raise, but you get a much bigger multiplier on the bonus structure.

I've been in a salary freeze for just under 8 years. Can't move up the band, no CoL increases at all. exact same salary.
sincerely, an 'overpaid' government employee
