Of course we lost both games in the trip that we really needed to win. I thought it was a good effort though, and with some luck we could have won. I hope Smith can find his groove now, just making saves and minding his own business. Imagine us having two goalies playing decent hockey. The goal scoring dried up, but it will come back sooner rather than later.

Overall, not a good game by the Flames, and that 2nd period was easily one of their worst of the season so far.

That being said, I was impressed by the push-back in the 3rd. There's no quit in these guys, that's for sure.

Excellent game by Smith. He fully deserved a W tonight, but unfortunately the team just couldn't solve Jones. That f'n guy always plays lights out against us and it's annoying as hell.

Bennett needs to score on that penalty shot. You can tell the guy has zero confidence in his offensive abilities right now.

The officiating was absolutely atrocious. That the Flames weren't awarded a single PP is a f'n joke. I counted at least 4 blatant penalties on the Sharks in the 3rd that could have easily been called. Unreal.

I am annoyed the penalty wasn't called.

However, Bennett with an embarassing attempt on the penalty shot and the rest of the team has no finish. They had the chances but simply werent good enough.

it seems that we're lucky to have a game where the refs don't disgrace themselves and the league. absolute embarrassment

i'll take that effort on a back to back against the sharks, unlucky not to have more points from this trip. of course the other goalie almost as bad as smith puts up a 29/30 save performance against us.

Garbage.
They must have ruled it a deflection (still wrong)

I think tonight really illustrates why all this analytic talk about Bennett being "unlucky" isn't the most sound.

I can definitely see that he generates all these "high-danger" chances. Just look at his penalty shot attempt. That's about as high danger of a chance that you could generate.

I'd take 10 Monahan high-danger attempts on the powerplay over 10 Bennett penalty shots if tonight was indicative of the quality of his attempts. Analytics would tell me I'm foolish, but I'm really not so sure.

No one is questioning the effort.

The execution in tight, as in finishing, was the problem.

Of course not, but 3 games does not make a season nor is it concerning when the 15 games previous, the Flames were top 10 in scoring in the league.

Dry spell right now. No cause for concern. It happens to everyone.

Very even match up, but ultimately the lack of finish and goaltender being out dueled was the source of demise. Very reminiscent of last season. Lots of point blank chances, breakways and etc. I’ve said it before, but they need more from the bottom 6 once again as they are sadly on pace for even less points than last season. Not sure how that’s even possible since they were completely remodeled.

I was replying to your proposal that the Flames could have had more points on the trip.

Simply dispelling that notion as they did not finish.

it's so frustrating that they missed a huge opportunity and dropped 4/6 points to such lackluster division teams, and not for very good reasons: goaltending 1 game and just horrible finishing and reffing the other. but i guess it's a long season, at least the oilers are worse

Officials aside, I thought Smith was fantastic and I hope he keeps it up.

I think as much as we hope for them to take that next step it's just not going to happen until they can take care of business agains the Ducks and Sharks on a regular basis.

I hope the 1st goal tonight was the end of "that" Mike Smith.

The fact that Smith was awesome all night after letting in a softy just goes to show how bloody important that position is. Smith and Jones were both awesome tonight. Smith unfortunately let in that 1st weak one, and that was it. Jones didn't blink all night, and that one freaking mistake was the difference.

Backlund's defensive lapse on the 2nd goal was just as inexcusable though, so there's no true "blame" tonight.

Good game by Smith.

Didn't like the officiating for sure, but you're not going to win a lot of games if most of your shots are from 25-40 feet out. Flames looked tired (don't blame them - it was a tough game against LA) and couldn't keep up with the Sharx.

Shot distribution chart shows only 7 shots from a high-danger area, and the vast majority from way too far out to score.

SJS games are soooo annoying to watch: the camera angle is VERY high and it's....disturbing to me. Really dislike their positions.
