I remember that, haha. I used to call into their hotline to vote for the top 10 at 10 and top 6 at 6, lol.

Is it true that the TV show Unsolved Mysteries did a segment on the burned out school house on the NE end of town (I think just it's by 84th out there)? I've always heard that but never saw it.

I used to like those places. Didn't have the corporate feel of 7-11.

I did have issues with the carbonated slurpies though. By the time you got to the cashier, the thing was half evaporated. I remember riding my bike from Bonavista, to the one in Midnapore on Bannister road, just to go to Red Rooster, when there was a 7-11 800 feet from my house. It is like a 2 minute drive now, back then it seemed like you were in an exotic, new city, when you ventured across the giant canyon known as Fish Creek Park to Midnapore.

A lot of people used to talk about breaking into and wandering around that scary old hospital on the hill that is now St. Mary's University College. I never did, did anyone here?

When I lived and worked in Kananaskis years and years ago, we used to make frequent trips to Banff and Canmore. One trip to Banff we went to the Banff Springs to check it out and wander around. Well it was off season and much of the hotel was closed down. It was creepy, and cool as hell! Gave off a real The Shining vibe. There were shutdown restaurants and kitchens, sitting rooms, long dark hallways.....all eerily quiet. It was really easy to get lost as that place is pretty big.

It was friggin awesome, that old hospital would have been cool.

Red Rooster was awesome. I'd rent Nintendo games from there, lol.

I found a gallery of old photos on the Herald website. I have not seen most of these before.

Looking at this thread, I kind of wish time travel was possible, I think it would be cool to experience Calgary during the 1960's to 1980's (as I was born in the mid-90's).

Sorry about that, though some people consider me an "old soul", does that kind of balance things out? ...yeah probably not...sorry.

That was a good movie. Though overall, history fascinates me (to an extent).

Air raid sirens.

There was just something cool about looking at those and imagining the fear hidden in the small dark corners of everyone's mind back then that the Soviets were going to come and level our country.

Sorry, I am joining this thread late. So is Chicken on the Way moving away from 14th ST? If so, how can I cope with it since I am not going to drive all the way to McKenzie Towne from Panorama...

One of those went off when I was like 3 or 4 and I started screaming about planes. Freaked my parents out. They didn't understand how I would know what they were for.

I think they're just expanding. There's one in Forest Lawn on International Ave.

I think there used to be one of those in Brentwood on the corner of Brisebois and Northmount. Where the old Texaco gas station used to be?

Yes there was, it was still there in the 90's when that was an Esso station on the corner.

Yup, that was the one my mom heard as a little girl. Luckily they were well practiced at hiding under their desks or running home as fast as they could... sure to save their lives in the event of an attack.

Not too sure if this is where I should be posting this as the Calgary Tower is still around for us to enjoy. I just moved into Palliser south and I can sign out a pass for the Calgary tower. I found this interesting fact from the late 60's.

From Calgary Tower's Wikipedia page:
Developers deliberately misled the public, claiming the tower would stand 187 metres (614 ft), in the hopes of preventing competing developers from surpassing the Husky Tower's height record. Shortly after officials in San Antonio, Texas attempted to claim the record in announcing the completion of the 190 metres (620 ft) Tower of the Americas, developers revealed the Husky Tower's true height (190.8 meters).
