On a show full of many other excellent actresses, as a new character, on Season 2 of a show that was supposed to only have 1, Meryl Streep carries a weight and gravitas to her performance that is...#### I hate this word but dammit it fits here... transcendent.
Just mind-blowing how good she is.

My wife and I stumbled on this gem of a show when we were vacationing in the UK last week. Fleabag is part misanthropic humor and part deep drama. Lots of great performances/dialogue/characters etc. We're nearly finished with season 1 and it's quite good. There's 2 seasons with plans for a 3rd. Really funny and sometimes dark. The only problem is it's on Amazon Prime.
Just so we're clear, this is the official trailer, but it hardly represents the show in any meaningful way. They basically can't air the good stuff in a trailer because it's too risque.
Just watch it if you have access. You can thank me later.
I watched the 1st two episodes on this purely off of your suggestion....
Awesome stuff. Really funny and interesting right off the bat. I'm following your word on tv shows from here on in.

Yeah not all shows for all people. You're in the minority on The Wire though, almost any top 10 tv show of all time type list has The Wire on it. Best show of all time imo.
Definitely, and actually it's a little disappointing. As you say it's slotted into almost every top 10 list (most top 5's, even) so it feels like I'm missing out...but I just can't get into it.

I don't have the wire in my top 5 shows list, personally, but I didn't find it to be the "you have to watch it for 10 episodes before you'll get it" type of deal. It's more like certain seasons are stronger than others. "You have to watch a few episodes before you'll get into it" was more what Breaking Bad was, for me.

Since we're talking about The Wire's rank amongst the greatest TV shows, here is an interesting article where they rank all the TV shows HBO has ever produced. I really like how high Enlightened is ranked. I always thought that was such a great and underrated show.

I have not watched either of the top 2. Guess I have some summer tv to look forward to.

I don't think that's a fair assumption of my media consumption habits. Maybe it's just excruciatingly slow paced with very little payoff. I made it through 2.5 seasons and called it quits. I didn't care for the story or any of the characters. I don't even remember the plot at that point.
Not all shows are for all people.
I wasn’t trying to make an assumption about your viewing habits, simply stating what I thought was required to enjoy the Wire. I agree that not all shows are for everyone, but I definitely wouldn’t agree with your proclamation that the show is slow paced or that there are no payoffs. The consequences in that show are immense.
Can't speak for others but I tried the Wire several times as well. It just felt like such a grind, which then felt like work, which then seemed silly.
And agree with Yamer.
I'm disappointed it's such a drag for me, because I'm sure it really is great.
I ground out season 1 and half of season 2 and literally shudder to think about the energy it might drain from. Me to pick it up again. Ugh

Fleabag is spectacular
Pheobe Waller-Bridge is absolutely brilliant
Season 2 was one of the best things I have ever seen on television.

I think The Wire, like Breaking Bad and others for me, are shows with a slowburn that are hard to binge. You almost need that weekly break in between until you get really into it. Certainly can understand why someone would describe it like "work".

Finished The Americans last night, it slowed down and meandered a little in the 4th and 5th seasons but it's one of the better series I've watched. The final season was great and the final episode might be one of the better series finals ever.
Huge recommend from me.

Re watching 'Rake' the original Australian version from back in the 2000's, they remade it in the US but without the drug use, shagging and endless swearing it really didn't work, but the first one was funny as hell and is on Netflix
