I feel bad for people who spent money on preseason tickets. That team is going to get walked.

NHL visiting teams usually just dress the minimum number of NHL veterans required especially early on in pre-season.

It won't be as bad as people think for the games at the Dome.

It reminds me when Rene Bourque was traded the Habs and he had to tell the media that although he has the most French-sounding name in the NHL, he doesn't speak a word of French.

Bringing Foo for that purpose would be unfair for him. He should have only one thing on his mind, making the team. Saddling him with a bunch of media requests would only hurt him I think. He doesn't need any distractions. He needs focus.

Plus, I doubt he speaks any Mandarin or Cantonese, so there wouldn't really be any point in bringing him.

I guess an advantage would be that you would get an honest look at how the prospects shape up against NHL talent.

For arguements sake the Flames will ice a roster which looks similar to this.

Mangiapane-Dube-Foo
Rychel- Graovac- Quine
Robinson- Ruzicka-Phillips
Ehliz-Lomberg-Gawdin

Valimaki- Svedberg
Kylington- Ollas Mattsson
Healey- Högström

Rittich
Glass
Parsons

A notable omission from the China group is top prospect Spencer Foo, who had an excellent rookie season with the Stockton Heat before getting a taste of the big show late last year, scoring twice in his first four games a Flame.

"Foo, (Andrew) Mangiapane, (Alan) Quine, (Buddy) Robinson, (Kerby) Rychel, (Matthew) Philips and so on - I've talked to those players and they know there's a method to the madness here," Treliving said.

"They're going to get great exposure. They're going to play in top offensive roles; they're going to play on special teams... We think that's real important for them. In a lot of ways, it's an added bonus with a lot of the regular players gone.

"I think it's a good opportunity for the guys that aren't going to really showcase themselves."

The Flames play two games during their eight-day journey, Sept. 15 and 19, against the Boston Bruins in Shenzhen and Beijing, respectively.

Treliving expects all 25 players to make at least one appearance during the trip.

"The goal was to get a small enough group together to make it manageable, and a big enough group so that you can have solid, competitive practices while you're there."

Yup, looks like mostly players with locks on spots are going, along with a few fillers, while almost everyone on the bubble is staying in Calgary to get every opportunity to show what they can do (of course, that's what the team is going to say to them, what else would you say to a player who was hoping to share in a once-in-a-lifetime experience with the Flames, only to be told that he was not going).

Based on the roster choices, it looks like Andersson is expected to make the team, which is good news. Unfortunately, I'm suspicious that Klimchuk is more likely a filler than a lock right now, but I'd love to be wrong about this.

Rittich will be getting the most starting minutes in goal, so he looks like the expected backup for the beginning of the season, which I'm OK with. I still think Gillies has more potential upside, so playing a lot of minutes in Stockton will benefit him more than Rittich, while the latter is currently more NHL-ready and is more suited to playing the backup role for the Flames.

Schneider surprised me for a second but I guess why bring the top 3 goalies in the org of there's only 2 games. Smith likely gets and game and Gillies gets one while Rittich gets ice time back home

From a coaching and management perspective, who's going to China and who's staying behind?

Treliving and Conroy are the only management going. Pascal, Maloney, and the rest are staying.

I believe Peters, Ward and Huska are the coaches going.

He's 4-5 generations removed from his Chinese ancestors and the ethnic half of his family is from the West Indies.

It would be a fairly large stretch to market him as a Chinese player.

Trust me on this, Foo did not want to go to China. The guys who are going were consulted with since mid July.
