They've finally released a trailer for Fox's reboot of the Fantastic 4 after months of speculation and rumours of issues with the production.
It looks pretty underwhelming to me and they are really pushing the Marvel Universe in a different direction to create their own story. Marvel Studios' strategy is to include a lot of star power as supporting actors to ground their newly introduced characters and this film doesn't have any stars of note so I don't know how well it will do. People who have seen the film have mentioned it is like a sequel to the director's film, Chronicle.
Hard to really take anything away from the trailer. Can't say I love the casting choices either, I barely know two of those actors, but I know I don't like them.
I like the fact they hide the Thing from us and most of the powers, it leaves me wanting more.

Teller, Jordan, and Bell have all proven themselves to be more than capable actors (Jordan was in The Wire, I didn't even know that). They're far superior to any of the actors from the Tim Story franchise, and most of the actors in their generation. I'm sure the three of them will deliver. Now I am not so sure I can say the same about Kate Mara, she was okay in American Horror Story, but I've never been a fan. But she would be hard pressed to not be an improvement over Jessica Alba.
Oh and that black guy is not Morgan Freeman! I thought Freeman owned the rights to the black guy reading prophetic statements in a trailer; he must be getting paid for his trademark.
Let's be honest here, it's the Fantastic Four so the movie will probably suck no matter what they do. I liked Chronicle though so who knows. The casting choices are puzzling though. They all look far too young for their roles.

the unreleased 1994 movie was better than the 2005 version:
IIRC, the motivations behind making another FF movie (just like how Sony rebooted Spider-Man) are roughly the same. They have to keep making them or the licenses revert to Marvel.

Don't really get it. Especially Ben Grimm, who is supposed to be an older grizzled working class type guy.

The whole thing has a weird Young-Adult novel feel to it for me (as was Chronicle), hence the young ages and everything changed (their powers are from an alternate dimension, etc.).
Spoiler!
Doctor Doom's background is that he's a whiz-kid hacker/blogger according to leaks

I suppose that could still somewhat fall in line with the original character. He was a poor latverian kid who won a scholarship to a US University.
I can see how he'd be a tough character overall to pull off without being totally cheesy. He's pretty bad ass the way he is as a comic character though.
So Sue Storm is white, and Johnny Storm is black. How are they still brother and sister? None of them look like a mix of either color. Typically in my experience, 1 black parent and 1 white parent dont make black or white kids.
They themselves are boring, but they've been involved in some pretty epic storylines. They are a great group to have things happen around them.
I hope whoever wrote this movie realizes that. The problem with the made two movies was the neutered Galactus and Doom and focused on the zany antics of the fantastic four themselves. Worst of both worlds.
The fantastic four only works in the context of a well executed villain or catastrophe. They are supposed to be kind if cerebral and dull. When you turn Sue Storm into Jessica Alba, all you have left is Jessica Alba in tights.
