Default [Mirtle] "Flames were really close to getting Frederik Andersen"

Andersen was traded by the Ducks on June 20th 2016. The Leafs gave up a late first (30th overall from Penguins, the middle of one of their three 2nds in 2017.

Apparently the Flames offer was better. What would that look like I wonder. Can't imagine us having given up the 6th overall but maybe.

It's really interesting to look back at when the Leafs traded for and signed Andersen. I kept hearing they did some deep divey numbers work on him that helped.

The Flames were also really close to getting Andersen. I believe their offer was actually better. Worked out well for leafs that Ducks preferred he go to East.
Edit: when asked by somebody else about what the offer would've been, he said 'better picks'.

Not surprised if true.... Treliving's history has shown he's not trigger shy to make moves to address gaps he believes are there, for a price that he believes to make sense for what he's getting in return.

Didn't the Flames also take a run at Cam Talbot?

Maybe they were more interested in Andersen

I’m happy with Mike Smith to be honest. Andersen is younger but unlike our future in that position. For what we gave up vs what we would’ve lost (Tkachuk and more Likely)

Probably something similar to what they eventually gave up for Elliott. Maybe 35 and one of the late second rounders (used to get Parsons and Dube).

Totally speculating, but maybe the Flames offered up a second round pick (they had two) in 2016, and a first rounder in 2017? The odds were that our 2017 first rounder would have been higher than 30th overall...

Of course, we ended up getting Dube/Parsons and Valimaki with those three picks -- with hindsight that would have been a pretty steep price to pay.

EDIT: Forgot the Flames also had #35 (traded to get Elliott), so that makes sense as well...

I like Andersen. We might have had a few more playoff games if he was our goalie last year.

Flames were also going after Murray, and then MAF got injured, Murray came up, stole his job away and that was that.

Where there's smoke there's fire. I like that goaltending was identified as a weakness, and Treliving was leaving no stone unturned in his attempt to fix the problem.

If true, Treliving was at least rumoured to be looking at nearly every goaltender that was available. That's the kind of GM I want in our team.

For all talk and debate that goes on within CP about needing a RW or whatever, it's stories like these that make me confident that Treliving is aware of the team's needs and deficiencies and working the phones to address it.

He would have been nice but can't say it's a huge miss. Smith will be good for now and next year and then one of our younger guys can hopefully take over.

I really like Rittich. I think he could be the break we need in goal.

Did a double take, for a second thought we were looking for help with Smith’s injury being more serious than first appeared. Even started thinking which D would be going back to TOR. Glad the Flames got Smith though, perfect situation to develop some of our own goalies.

Yea, the ducks were going to trade their divisional rivals a starting goalie.... Gimme a break!

How close could this have actually been?

I'd imagine the Ducks are pretty happy they didn't trade us Andersen, since we played them in the first round and Brian Elliott was awful.

Elliott almost won that series single-handedly. For the Ducks.

I'd say that he did win it single handedly.

The Flames actually outplayed the Ducks, although it's hard to see that when the other team keeps scoring goals.
