Holy smokes that’s amazing  I could tell that Brad was up to something in his interview with Ryan Leslie yesterday. His body language and use of positive words had me thinking that a deal was in the works. Did not expect one so quick though. Very good deal though. Very impressed. Good work Brad. Gives us some nice wiggle room in the future as well.

I'm not concerned about the deal length. Backlund's game is centered on his intelligence, so I expect a high level of play into his 30s. He won't end up looking like Matt Stajan out there. I think he's our current / future Bergeron-lite.

Didn’t I say Backlund will almost certainly be better than Stajan is?? He will add veteran value at a time where the cap could be in the high 80 millions. This is a good signing, it’s nothing close to being as bad as the Brouwer signing. 1 year too long and that’s it.

If he averages 70gp over that contract he’ll finish with the 2nd most games played of any Flame (depending on how long Giordano plays).

I was hoping for like 5.75 x 6 at the start of this season, so I'm very pleased with 5.35 x 6 even if earlier reports from a few weeks back indicated we may get him for less.

No. We should look forward to paying our 2nd line centre $5.35M until someone supplants him and he becomes our 3rd line centre.
Bold prediction: Mikael Backlund never has a season as poor as Matt Stajan's best as a Flame.

Getting a second line Center for under 5 and a half who is as defensively responsible as Backlund is a major win.
Think about what guys get in UFA. I imagine he would have commanded 6+ for 6 in free agency. I guess we could have rolled the dice on another Brouwer because CP loves how that worked out.
