Default Adirondack Thunder 2016/17 General Discussion

Thought I'd get a thread going for discussion on the organization's ECHL affiliate.

Current players of interest for Flames fans on this squad include:

F - Brett Pollock (ELC)
G - Mason McDonald (ELC)

Also:

F - Mikkel Aagaard - attended Flames and Heat camps
D - Stepan Falkovsky - Flames 2016 7th round draft pick, currently only 19 years old and on a PTO (or is it ATO?)
D - Roman Dyukov - also attended Flames and Heat camps

The Thunder have started the season 2-0 so far.

McDonald got both wins, but his line isn't great with 2.88 GAA and only a .870 save %

Aagaard has 1g 2a thru 2 games
Pollock has 0g 1a thru 2 games
Dyukov has 0g 1a thru 2 games
Falkovsky 0g 0a thru 2 games

Falkovsky is signed to an AHL/ECHL contract with Stockton. He's no longer on a tryout.

Thunder announce they have signed Dennis Kravchenko to a one year ECHL deal.

Looks like he tried to find an AHL deal after he was cut from Stockton's camp but couldn't.

Mason McDonald has a save percentage of 86.3% and a GAA of 3.16 after 3 games.
Ken Appleby, the "backup", has 93.8% in one game. Appleby had 92.4% in 29 games last year.

At this rate, I don't see McDonald keeping the starting job. Appleby, a New Jersey prospect, just seems much better. Appleby is a year older than McDonald though.

It appears the Adirondack Thunder have not lost in regulation.

MacDonald will always be compared to Thatcher Demko for obvious reasons. If it makes anyone feel better Demko is also struggling early in his pro career. He is currently 0-2 in Utica with a 4.05 GAA and .867 save percentage.

Isn't the Adirondack Thunder own by the Flames? That should guarantee him a good amount of games.

I'm not sure Appleby is the backup, he wasn't with the team when McDonald got his starts. Apple was sent down from Albany and immediately played.

You are correct.

Brody Hoffman was the backup goalie in all three of McDonald's starts this season.

The net in Addy is McDonald's no question, although you will probably see a Devils goalie get a start every once in a while because they have a agreement with the Flames to use the Thunder from time to time, and they also have a log jam of goalies with Kinkaid backing up Schneider in the NHL and Wedgewood, Blackwood and Appleby all needing to share the net in Albany.

Reading their pre-game preview it sounds as if Appleby is expected to start again tonight. I don't think it is nearly as cut and dry as you think Roof-Daddy, I do hope you are right though.

Hmm. Interesting.

Well, the Devils did the same thing last season and Appleby ended up starting 29 games for the Thunder.

Last season though the Flames didn't have a surplus of goaltending prospects in the pros, so I'm sure the Flames didn't have any problems giving up the net.

I guess we will see how it pans out, but what we do know for sure is that the Flames own that team, and the people who run/coach the team were hired by, and report to Flames AGM Brad Pascall.

We also know that it's a developmental team first and foremost so with McDonald, Rittich and Gillies all on ELC's and also having McCollum in the AHL, Flames brass is going to prefer having a Flames goalie in the ECHL net most of the time.

But yeah, I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Appleby was also the rookie last year, I think that played a large part but he was the one who got the starts in the playoffs for the Thunder.

What we don't know is the agreement details between the Thunder and Devils regarding the goalie spot, there may be a certain number of guaranteed games.

It looks like McDonald is starting tonight afterall, the preview on the Thunder website led me to believe otherwise. It will be interesting to see how they split the games.

Kanzig is also in the Thunder lineup tonight, he appears to be paired with ECHL veteran Mike Bergin.

Through 1 period of play the Thunder have only allowed 5 shots on goal, of which McDonald stopped all.

Yeah, I have no idea what kind of details there are in an agreement like that, but you have to think that there is no way the Flames would handcuff themselves by giving away too many starts, especially when they were pretty sure they'd have their own full time prospect ELC goalie in the ECHL this year.

They literally have two goalies under contract for every net they can utilize.

It's not like last year where they didn't have a goalie of their own to send to the ECHL. Last year the Thunder had 10 goalies dress for them and not one of them had an NHL SPC from Calgary.

Thunder win 5-2 tonight. McDonald stopped 13 of 15 shots. Falkovsky scored his first professional goal.

Pollock hasn't dressed for two straight games.

Must be hurt. Scored a goal in the last game he dressed.

Does anyone else feel like Falkovsky should be the one getting called up rather than Kanzig? There might be a player there with Falkovsky, I don't see the same with Kanzig.

Can anyone who's watching Adirondack give any reports?

I can't comment from watching, but probably a couple reasons.
1) Kanzig was drafted 3 years ago and Falkovsky picked up this year so they probably want to see Kanzig take another step
2) Probably happier seeing Kanzig get less ice time as a 5/6/7 than Falkovsky who needs to play
