Depends on what your electricity price is. Enmax fixed rate is 11.49 cents per kWh. The extended range Lightning has a battery capacity of 131kWh.

So a full charge would be $15.05, though in practice it'll be a bit more due to losses during the charging process.

I'm the last one to stick up for Tesla, but this type of accident happens all the time with gas cars. A lady drove through the wall of my store thinking she had her car in reverse

These things vary quite a bit based on gas price, type of driving, electricity price, distance travelled, etc.

But based strictly on Ford's posted efficiency numbers and currect costs, driving an average Albertan distance:

F150 gas: 12L/100km @ 1.45/L = $17.40/100km
F150 lightning: 49kWh/100mi = 30.63kWh/100km @ 0.13/kWh = $3.98/100km

At an average of 20,000km/year that's a savings of $2684 per year

It seems to happen more on cars where they screw around with the tried and true familiar shifting mechanisms we're all used to:

https://www.autoweek.com/news/a18448...using-shifter/

Quote:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's investigation into the Monostable gear shifter used by a number of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles is turning into a recall; FCA will recall approximately 1.1 million vehicles worldwide to modify the operation of the shifter that has now caused 121 accidents and 41 injuries.

The issue itself is not a fault of engineering but rather design, as the shifter returns to the default center position without giving the driver sufficient feedback as to the selected gear.

Also interesting to consider that it depends a lot on where you charge. I can charge my Ioniq 5 at UVic for free. Great for me when I’m there twice a week for 2+hours while my daughter is swimming.

And the Tesla shifter is a million times dumber than that design. You have to swipe up or down on a touchscreen to go into drive or reverse, and there isn’t a whole lot of visual indication what gear you’re in. I can totally see how someone could back up to something, do a poor job of swiping up on the screen thinking they were going into drive, and then hitting the pedal and going backwards because they’re still in reverse.

Nor including lower maintenance costs

I want an EV that has fake sounds like the BTTF Delorean when it is accelerating. Fun fact, its related to Luke's Landspeeder. It just sounds so fast.

I can't believe I never noticed that.

Yeah that would be a perfect EV sound.

The last 2 days in a row driving home from work on Crowchild near Shaganappi I've seen a Rivian. Different ones. I've never seen one in person prior ever. Strange looking headlights.

Interestingly, the 2023 Lightnings are so heavily discounted down here now that, similarly equipped, they come in up to nearly 10k less than gas ones.
Which is still way too rich for me, so I came home with a Maverick hybrid instead. Which I love for lots of reasons, including what looks 45+ miles per American gallon for the type of driving I do.

Have to say, I am loving my EV.

So crazy fast, and handles like a dream. Can't wait to slap summers on it and give launch control a go LOL

Man, I really really really want to love the Maverick, but it's too damned expensive now. It was never available in Canada anywhere near the original, tantalizingly low advertised base price of $19,995 USD, but now only a couple years later even a stripper XL is ~$36,000 CAD MSRP and essentially impossible to find for less than $38,000-39,000. That's, like... $12,000 more than it was "supposed" to be...

It's unfortunate that the Maverick Hybrid can't be equipped with AWD. I would purchase that. We currently have a Fusion Hybrid and it is a great vehicle.
