I challenge anyone to come up with a theoretical trade involving McDavid, realizing that teams are all close to the cap, so salaries going each way have to be fairly close (likely within $500k). Also, there would have to be some amount of perceived value going each way that also has to line up.
Barkov (5.9) + Ekblad (7.5) + Knight (ELC). Panthers retain 500k on ekblad, 12.9 out, 12.5 in
I would hate to see it happen because I think it would help the oilers build themselves up fairly quickly, but it seems somewhat close in value

To Ottawa (10.8M cap before trade): Connor McDavid (12.5M), Kassian (3.2M)
To Edmonton (0 cap before trade): Derek Stepan (6.5M), Brady Tkachuk (925K), Erik Brannstrom, 4x 1st round picks.
Edmonton frees up 8.225M and puts that towards Brady's RFA contract. Leaves OTT with 2.575M in cap space.

To me if I was florida there's no way I would make that trade. But I don't want to hangstring myself with the McDavid contract while giving up a number 1 center and number 1 blueliner and a good prospect.
The trade would make Floriday worse rather then better. And that's the problem with a lot of teams that would be interested in McDavid.

This was my thought as well. Closest thing I can come up with. Plus it allows Oilers management to trade him as far away as possible and to a market that does not get much exposure. Florida could use the superstar draw to their games.
Barkov is on a good contract but it expires in 3 years I think. Ekblad is better than any defenceman that the Oilers have - and that includes prospects. Knight is a top 3 goalie prospect in the league.

Florida does this because Mcdavid brings people to the games. Look at what Ovi did for Washington or Crosby to Pittsburgh. Barkov is good but he doesn't sell tickets anywhere near what Mcdavid would

In the long run, it makes Ottawa worse, plus the 4 first round draft picks are extreme.
If Edmonton tries to trade McDavid right now with the cap crunch that's going to happen, its going to be a buyers market. Plus Ottawa isn't going to add that much cap. Nobody is going to do Edmonton any favors.

Why would Edmonton (or Ottawa for that matter) do this?
The challenge was to show that its possible to make a trade with McDavid being involved that makes sense cap wise. Not to explain why it makes sense for both teams.
Although if i'm Edmonton I would make that deal.

Ah! You see thats your mistake right there!
If you were anyone but Edmonton, you would do this deal. Because it makes sense.
However, if you were thinking like an 'Oiler' you absolutely would not do this deal because being able to pimp 'The Greatest Player in the World' would be more important to you than.....well, anything else really.
See? Its all about the details!

The challenge was to do both. It’s not impossible, but it’s really hard.
Making something work cap wise isn’t hard at all. Finding a balanced perception of value on top of that is hard.
Wouldn't every decent player in the league have EDM on their no trade list? It's a career killer, why go there? Edmonton will scree up any trade with Drai or McDavid so bad they will be in an even worse situation than they are now. It's not a concern.
