Apparently the UofC operates a nursing school in Qatar, the visit had something to do with that.

Actually, the U of C is looking to build one there. Trust me.

Trust. It would be kind of neat to see the Amiri flight birds here on a semi-regular basis as that relationship grows.
I know that Qatar Airways is starting flights to Montreal soon, and they would like more frequency into Canada (much like Emirates does). However I think they are approaching our government in a much better way, and could see some results.
You never know, perhaps they will serve YYC at some point?

I saw that A340 yesterday in the sky after takeoff and was racking my brain trying to figure out who that was. Figured it was a diversion of some sort.

I'm not sure if it's been posted here already (I don't think so) but www.flightstats.com is a great site has all commercial departures and arrivals for airports. It's where I found out that Canadian North flies into YQY once a week, and am shocked to see how many charter flights fly in and out of YQY as well.
I think it's a great heads up for plane heads

I prefer www.flightaware.com to Flightstats.
You can create a user account and get email/text notifications of when certain types of aircraft have filed a flight plan to a city you choose. That is how I get notifications for any 747's, Antonov 124, or even A380 flights that may end up here. The main airport window also shows a lot of the flights that are in the area, and not coming into YYC, so you can find out what that big plane was that you saw cruising over the city on the way to the NW for example.

I find Flight Stats more user friendly, but when charters or cargo flights come in I'll check Flight Aware to see what they are, as they often have that higher level of detail.
Mind you it says a charter Air Canada Jazz CRJ flew into YQY last night, but magically flew out a Dash-8

Hehe, I notice a lot of the online flight tracker programs get the odd bug that has the wrong aircraft type listed.

A couple of shots of the crane up for the new control tower, it is really going to be one tall tower when done!

I also am totally jealous of the view that crane operator has.

I noticed on the weekend that Aero Drive (or whatever it's called -the road that goes by the Purolator Depot north of 64 Ave near Deerfoot Mall) seems to be open all the way around to 19 St NE near the long-term lots. Nice as a relief road for Deerfoot when I'm going to the airport at rush hour.
It's also a pretty good place to watch airplanes (for now) - since they're going to be building stuff around there it's probably not going to last, but great viewpoints and little traffic at the moment.
Nice to finally have it open, since they said this road would be done in 2010.

I was there Sunday. My 2-year old suggested I try "the new road" and we watched about 15 planes take off/land. Keeps him entertained - between the new viewing points at the airport and the rail crossings in town, I get virtually free entertainment for him for hours.

Honestly, free entertainment for him, or is he just an excuse for you to stare a planes and rail crossings?

Half from column "A" and half from column "B"! I never even noticed rail crossings until my kid came along. He's obsessed; but I was the same way with planes. Now I notice them every time I drive through!
But yeah, I don't know what I'd do with a daughter - unless she likes airplanes too.

I've indoctrinated my daughter, now when she hears a plane she starts looking around to see it. Mission accomplished.
