Exactly that’s why I just don’t see Toronto as a true contender to land Tavares.

If you're Tavares, how do you not sign with the Leafs?
Hometown team
Babcock
Matthews
Andersen
Marner
Whichever D they trade Nylander for
And there really are few cities better to be a winner in than Toronto. The Big Smoke goes full-on cult worship for a trip to the first round - if you actually won the Leafs a Cup, I don't think you'd actually be allowed to touch the ground as you moved about town. They would carry you like Xerxes in 300. I don't even think you'd need to pay them.

The more I think about it the happier I am that we aren’t spending 11+ million on Tavares.

And if he does sign there and they dont win...torches and pitchforks! That fan base and media would be a reason not to sign there.

I would put $100 on Toronto to win it all if they get Tavares. Whatever they're missing, they have the assets to acquire.

Tavares x 10.5 mill - let’s say he takes a hometown discount
Matthews x 9 mill - At the very least
Marner x 7 mill - He’ll easily command that
Nylander x 5.5 mill - at the very least
They need to shed salary from the likes of Marleau, Martin or Kadri to make it work if they want to keep all their shining pieces and Tavares.

I don't see that as both Nylander and Marner are RFAs, bottom line is that somehow Pittsburg has made it work, Toronto can certainly do it when the cap is much higher. They can certainly make it work as well if not better then any other team in the running as they have a projected cap hit of only 39 million for 2019-2020, this allows a lot of flexibility. The way things are going the cap will be at 85 million a year from now.
If you sign the above 4 players for 30 million that leaves you with 16 million to sign 8 players, you sign 3-4 at a million or under(they have a lot of good young players as they won the calder cup) and you have 12 million left for 4- 5 players and its very workable. Certainly when compared to San Jose who have one more year of Couture and Pavelski, the cap scenario is no worse then that and all teams have to move things around when bringing in player like that.
I still see the Islanders as number 1, I just see Toronto as very solid #2. The Islanders picked up a couple more outstanding players last year, and have a very bright future ahead. The three weakest positions in New York were GM, Coach and goalie. Two of those have been addressed and they have a lot of money left over for a goalie and JT.

not surprised about the list...
was never sure why ppl kept thinking JT would come to Calgary... now, if he was from alberta, then it would make sense... but without ties here, just seemed like there would be a number of other destinations more desirable and with a better shot at the playoffs on top of that

Is he going to take a tour of each town and be treated like royalty or just use modern technology and Skype?

When are "these huge free agent signings" even on the same planet as Tavares? When was the last time anyone this good hit the open market in their prime? I honestly can't think of one since I've been following hockey.

Last one I can think of offhand was Marian Hossa signing with the Blackhawks (and Red Wings the year before that). Before that, Chara going to the Bruins was a pretty big deal. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

All of the lists I have seen reported are all guesses, I think we are secretly one of the 5 :-)

I don't know, I would have loved to see:
Tkachuk-Tavares-Bennett
Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm
Dube-Backlund-Foo/Frolik
Mangiapane-Janko-Lazar
Gio-Brodie
Hanifin-Hamonic
Kulak-Stone (place any of Valimaki, Andersson or Kylington here if they beat out the incumbent in training camp)

I don't think anyone truly thought JT would even consider Calgary, with the exception of a few posters. I figured there was zero chance of Tavares coming or considering Calgary. Even if we made the playoffs.
He was never a realistic option for the Flames.

Suter and Parise were the last star players to hit the open market. Debatable whether they were worth it - certainly Suter has been.
I don't think you truly go wrong paying for star players. You just can't convince yourself a guy is still a star (hi, Brad Richards). And you'd be better off avoiding everyone who gets to July 1 who isn't a star until July 3 or 4.

Exactly. Nobody in Toronto cares that Mats Sundin and Wendell Clark never won anything. They're Mats Sundin and Wendell Clark. Shut up and give them more cameos in CTV sitcoms.
