Carlson has $2 million in signing bonus money for 2020-21 and another $2 million for 2022-23, the potential lockout seasons. Likely not as much as agent Rick Curran would have wanted for those 2 years but the same as Oshie/Kuznetsov also got for those 2 same years ($2 M SB)

I mean I am not surprised. It's what happens when you go beast mode to a stanley cup win.

Lol I figured it would be similiar to the Burns deal but didn't guess it would be the same.

Wonder if there's a NTC or NMC

$8 million contracts are becoming more common so while it's a lot of money he probably could have got that on the market although if I was the Caps I would have been looking for a bit of a discount because of the 8th year. Looking at his career stats I feel he's going to be a 30 point guy for most of this deal which is al little frighting.

My thoughts too but, that's what one really good year can get you. He lucked out and it was his contract year. 15 goals 53 assists this year. This blows the door open for Karlsson and Doughty now.

Damn, this seems pretty expensive to me. Although I'm not the biggest Carlson fan.

Seems about market value to me. Doughty and Karlsson are going to get at least 10.

wow, Stanley Cup bonus. Good for him, but tough to build good teams around contracts like that.

I would sure as hell rather have Hamilton at $5.75M than Carlsson at $8M. I know, UFA, just saying - you still have to pay it and build a roster.

The Flames, with no contracts over $6.75M, and a very young core, mostly locked up, are in a really, really good position going forward.

Kind of, except we also don't have a contending core at least in part to not having the top end talent necessary. Great value contracts are great and all but I'd rather have at least one $8-$10 guy that's worth it because he's that big of a gamebreaker.

*Not referring to Carlson btw, just to your assertion that we're looking really good because everyone is under $6.75

Especially as there's no real quality "plan b" for teams.

In fact, the second highest scoring UFA defenseman is his former teammate, Mike Green. Green's coming off a 6M/year contract that he signed after putting up 45 points on the same team that Carlson just put up 68 points on.

Burns signed an 8M/year contract...until he is 40. Carlson is 28, a 7 year contract for him will be entirely during 'prime years'.

If he simply chases money (and that may depend on if he gets the Cup or not), I think the hockey world will be surprised at the contract value.
My post a little bit over a month ago. Actually surprised it's only 8M. Contracts keep going up for high end players and it seems like people are always surprised when they see the numbers. With a salary cap of 79.5M, the salary cap has officially doubled since it first started. Players like Iginla who were making 7M a year in the early days of the cap would be taking up the same cap with 14M a year contracts.

Burns signed a contract that was 8M/year. Carlson just signed after leading all defenseman in scoring. He was going to get paid.

And while you can argue that Burns was putting up almost 30 goals as reasons for his cap hit, people seem to overlook that Burns' contract goes until he is 40! If he was signed until he was even a modest 36, his cap hit would have been 10M.

Whether or not it will work out for Washington, I am skeptical, but it was obvious he could have got 8M+ on the free market.

Almost certainly. The cap has risen significantly, but when it comes to top tier players it's been a while that they have been making 10M+ in actual money.

Crosby averages over 10.5M a year until he's 35.
Parise averages over 10M a year until he's 35.
Weber averages 11M a year until he's 35.
Suter averages 10M a year until he's 35.
Ovechkin, going forward, makes 10M a year now until he's 35. He signed his contract in 2008 with a cap-hit of 9.5M+.
Lundqvist makes over 10M a year until he's 35.
Kane and Toews make 10.5M a year.
Kopitar averages over 10M a year until he's 35.
Burns is making 10M a year until he's 35 and signed until he's 39.
Benn makes 9.5M a year.
Subban makes 9M a year despite signing while still an RFA.
Price makes 10.5M a year.

Throw in RFA second contracts like Eichel and McDavid and it's pretty obvious that Doughty will get 10M.

The best thing the Kings have going for them is that Kopitar is making 10M and that may be a soft-limit for them as the captain that Doughty might be willing to sign for. But if he wanted money, he could reach UFA and get 12M without any GM blinking an eye.

This makes Hamilton at $5.57M for the next 3 seasons look like an absolute steal.

Still signed for less as a UFA and coming off a Stanley Cup vs. Drasaitl coming out of his ELC lol.
