Florida gets a bad rap in the media, but it's actually pretty great to live in.
Traffic is surprisingly decent despite the large population.
Mostly incredible weather year-round (hurricanes notwithstanding).
People are mostly pretty good. Some of the most wonderful people I have ever met ended up here, originally from other places.
Gator problems are ridiculously overblown.
I've never met anyone that even resembles "Florida Man".
I feel like the negatives of Florida are a meme at this point. A myth perpetuated by popular culture.
I will say the drivers suck the worst of any drivers I've ever encountered, so there's that.
Come at me bro.

But.... it’s in the states. Ew.

Wait, we talking wine?!
France is garbage. Even the #### they keep at home is trash
Australia makes great wine, they export yellowtail. Essentially kool-aid #### that.
Also, we are talking Canadian cities. I'd rather visit Saskatoon than Calgary.
Just kidding. I'd rather die than either.

The traffic in North Van is so crappy you’d miss your flight to either anyway.

Everyone knows the best way to live in the Calgary area is to move just outside of it. I've lived in Airdrie and Okotoks and preferred both to any of the areas of Calgary I lived in

I moved from Calgary to High River some 18 years ago and have never regretted the move.

Are you sure it's not just because America is incredibly segregated and you being a doctor likely live in a nice area, therefore not having to interact with the American lower class?

LOL, I interact with them regularly. Yes, there is separation to some extent, meaning my neighbors are not poor, but go a few blocks and you're in lower rent areas very close by.
America's lower classes aren't that different from Canada's. I worked in Forest Lawn for a time, in the roughest part as well. I've found that the lower classes here are full of really great and honest people, very honest in fact. I found the same to be true working in Forest Lawn. It's the rich you have to worry about. Their ethical norms are skewed and warped, and often act out of self-interest only. I've had more run-ins with the wealthy down here than I've ever come close to having with the poor. They're pretty crappy and selfish most of the time.
Basically, it's probably worse living around the rich than the poor. Poor people are usually pretty great. Rich people usually suck.

I feel like the social ills are more pronounced in the US lower class though as compared to Canada. A rough Calgary neighborhood pales in comparison to a rough neighborhood in the US, and it's hardly comparable.
The other factor is that Canada seems to have a lot of social mobility at this point, whereas that seems to be diminishing in the US. So you have some desperate people in those lower class neighborhoods and between that and the exacerbated social problems it's a poor combination.

I have always told my kids that if you want to improve the quality of your life, move to a small town. In general, you will feel much more a part of the community. I moved from Toronto to Trenton, Ontario at the age of 16, and my world seemed to expand exponentially. Instead of knowing a few people on the block, I knew ten times the number of people in town.
