I look at this, and I say -- how on earth are we going to get any production out of him and ergo boost his value while he's getting this icetime? You look at how he was producing early on last season:
First 34 GP:
8 G
9 A
17 PTS
17:31 ATOI
He was actually getting good production with good linemates. Now look at the rest of the year:
Remaining 40 GP:
5 G
3 A
8 PTS
15:08 ATOI
And now he's playing even less, with even worse linemates. But that begs the question -- how on earth do we solve this? I mean, I want Brouwer to produce as much as anyone, but he's not going to do that with Glass and Stajan, and how can we justify bumping Jagr, Ferland, or Frolik to the 4th line?
I think what needs to happen is this:
Trade Stajan
Make Glass the 13th forward
Play Brouwer with Jankowski and Lazar
A Lazar - Jankowski - Brouwer line provides Brouwer with two decent linemates instead of plugs, possibly increasing his trade value. I also think that Brouwer should be given time on the 2PP unit -- he's fine in a powerplay role, especially in front of the net. Make the PP units as such:
Jagr
Gaudreau - Monahan
Brodie - Versteeg
Brouwer
Bennett - Backlund
Giordano - Hamilton
If the Flames are to have any hope of dealing Brouwer
anywhere, they should at the very least put him in somewhat of a position to succeed. Note that I don't condone in any way the breaking up of the 3M Line, because that's just foolish. I get that putting Brouwer on the top line is another possible fix, but c'mon -- it's been established that Ferland and Lazar both work better there, as might Jagr. And do we really want to play Brouwer with Bennett?
What I'm saying is that the Flames need to try something
new, as well as sticking with what
works. Brouwer on the powerplay in front of the net
works -- it's a situation in which he contributed in multiple occasions last season, even if he didn't show up on the scoreboard. Playing him with Mark Jankowski is
new -- it gives Jankowski a chance to play with a guy who has scored 20 goals on multiple occasions recently and gives Brouwer the opportunity to play with two highly-skilled young players instead of plugs.
