This is the battle that will probably never be won. Reclaiming a cemetery for any other purpose will never happen.

I'm an organ donor, but not for science. I don't know why I care, but I wouldn't want to be splayed out on some gurney while a med student dissects my nut sack. Just a bit too icky for me.
I want to be cremated and have my ashes spread in the Glenmore Reservoir so you can all carry a piece of me with you.

Burying the dead for remembrance has been a human thing before written history.
And even if you discount that, many cemeteries are still quiet, beautiful parks.

Sure, but people also used to believe in God but we're smarter than that now.

And they're only building it to 1:100 flooding, so oh yeah it's gonna happen again.

I hear you, but I'm also skeptical. You actually have a decent opportunity to influence things in a small town. I suspect the current state of Canmore is largely a result of classic NIMBYism as much as anything else. From what I've seen, the arguments still largely boil down to: traffic. parking. longer line to get my latté. fighting density in the 'wrong' places.
And of course the wildlife corridor stuff. I'm normally not a big fan of the 'yet you participate in society too' argument, but I find it hard to fully discount in this case. Entire lifestyles are built around driving on the highway (often way more than most people) to use ski resorts (not exactly innocent in terms of wildlife impact) and/or venture into the wilderness, which also impacts wildlife. But nobody else should add any more drops to the wildlife disruption bucket.
North America is slowly coming to its senses in terms of urban design. Canmore could and should have been at the forefront of it (those folks are pretty enlightened, afterall), but instead they fought for the same stupid concessions like more parking and wider roads, and now they have to try to undo those impacts.
I'd certainly prefer Canmore to be less developed, but then again it is bounded on the south and west by two different protected parks. And to the east by a bunch of mining and cement factories. I don't actually think it would be that bad if a bunch more got developed like a lot of places in the Alps (that are still pretty magical).

That wouldn't bother me at all. I actually wanted to buy a house next to a cemetery (it was a decent discount to comparable houses, and the dead don't have loud parties late at night or put their garbage in my black bin) but my wife vetoed that.

I'm assuming the one behind your dad's place isn't along the Bow River and doesn't see much traffic. A paved pathway is accessible for more users, lower maintenance when the pathway sees high use, and can withstand erosion better when built correctly.

Naw, from Riverside park north is all gravel. Most paths are in the older part of town. They basically need and get no maintenance because they were built well. Their is no way on earth a paved path going through Canmore winters would have survived and been in better condition than the gravel ones after 30 years. Not a chance.

Most "well built" gravel paths that handle high traffic tend to be old rail beds or access roads that were converted. Paving those paths wouldn't be any worse either due the oversized structure underneath it. You want road-quality pathways everywhere? Ask your politicans to stop cheaping out on pathways.

Some of them are old rail, a lot aren't though. I think they got the clay blend just right. Point is, these paths don't need maintenance, have very little cost, and don't degrade like asphalt does.
I've often wish Calgary would look at whatever Canmore used, and do that. So many gravel pathways instantly erode in this city. And you can tell just looking at it that it doesn't' have any "sticky" qualities to hold it together. More clay!
