Knights Vegas trades David Clarkson's contract and a 4th to Leafs for Garret Sparks

Renaud Lavoie
@renlavoietva
The @GoldenKnights are trying to get rid of David Clarkson contract and I’m told the @MapleLeafs could be the team that can trade for him.

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
This is going to happen involve TOR getting a fourth-round pick and sending Garret Sparks to LV

Toronto Maple Leafs @MapleLeafs
.@SportChek Player Alert: @MapleLeafs acquire a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft and forward David Clarkson from Vegas in exchange for goaltender Garret Sparks.

Why would Toronto take on what I assume is more cap space?

What's the benefit for the Leafs here? Sure Clarkson is LTIR, but they're giving to take this.

What the hell is Toronto doing? 10.5M on IR between Horton and Clarkson. They are still paying Kessel 1.2M. Very weird.

Free draft pick. They get rid of a bad goalie in Sparks. Clarkson just goes on LTIR.

Clarkson also only has $1 million in salary left to be paid out (which may also be covered by insurance).

Sparks was going to be paid $750k to play in the AHL.

Leafs are already going to be using LTIR with Horton, so cap hit didn't really matter.

4th round pick for essentially nothing.

But they have 5.3M for horton already. With Clarkson they are at around 83M. Isn't there a rule that you can only be 10% over the cap in the off season (so 89.6M). What if Marner is offsheeted over 10M. They can't fit him on the roster now as it would put them over that 10%.

I don’t really get this. Yes he’s on LTIR but that doesn’t equate to “free cap space” like some think it does. They can still only exceed the cap by 10% in the off-season irrespective of Clarkson and Horton being on LTIR, so where does this leave Marner?

They're paying ~5mil cash for a 4th rounder? That seems dumb even for the richest team in the league.

I think this is a case where Horton's LTIR provides incentive for Toronto to make the trade.

They are going to be over the cap anyways, so they won't be banking cap space. Bringing in Clarkson won't affect their cap in that regard. So it's 1M in salary from Clarkson (may be insured?), but they moved out 750k in salary from Sparks, and get a fourth.

Nah, Clarkson's deal is insured and on LTIR. He signed a crazy backloaded contract that only has $1 million left to be paid.

I think it is covered. That was Columbus did the Horton-Clarkson trade, because Horton wasn't insured and Clarkson was.

Maybe there was a Do-over clause back in the deal that sent Clarkson to Vegas in the first place? Lol

The Leafs now need to move 700k to get under the cap and be able to take full advantage of the $10.55m LTIR.

Just a shot in the dark, with a very basic understanding of LTIR cap relief.

I do think contracts can be insured for specific years though, it's not an all-or-nothing type situation. Could be wrong, but it's possible this year (where he makes 1M in salary) wouldn't be insured.

From CapFriendly:

Can LTIR be used in the off-season?
Yes, LTIR can be used in the off-season while the 10% off-season cushion is active. LTIR in the off-season is calculated using the basic equation outlined above, which permits a team to exceed the off-season salary cap. To use off-season LTIR the team must provide doctors proof that the player in question will continue to be injured at the beginning of the regular season for 10 NHL games and 24 calendar days.
