I ought Wotherspoon never got a chance in a role suited to him as a stay at home guy. He was always paired with an Engelland or Smid when he should have played with a partner that can skate, break the puck out, play tight in neutral ice. The best hockey he ever played came at the tail end of 2015-16 on a pair with Jakub Nakladal and he certainly looked like an NHLer at that time. As long as we kept signing guys like Stone, Engelland, now Prout, it wasn't going to work for him. He could find success as the "Ian Cole" on a pair with his "Justin Schultz" IMO.

If Wotherspoon needs his partner to prop him up it doesn't sound like he's an NHL player.

Plenty of #6 and even #4 defensemen need their partner to prop them up. Heck Michael Stone is the perfect example, he is utterly useless without a partner (Kulak, Brodie, OEL) that can carry the load on a pair.

Now whether that's a good or valuable NHLer, is up for debate. But it's still a tier above AHLer.

I'll always remember Trefilov stopping 52 of 53 shots against the Rangers in 94. That Rangers team was a juggernaut and he was god-like on that day. That might have been his first career NHL start.

I had his hockey card from when he played in Winnipeg, and he was kneeing a guy in the corner. Always remembered that and loved him for it.

It was his second start. His first start was a 5-5 tie against Vancouver in 92.

Looks like his second start from that game log. Still pretty impressive!

Sending out a shout to all for the great memories of prospects over the last 20+ years.

Boo to making me feel old! As I said to the wife this morning, “your shampoo added some grey to my hair.” Heh.

The beard helped. His stature also helped. His nickname was on point. I wish he was a better face puncher though.
