It is good to see the success Dube has had in the minors so far. I hope he is getting some reps at centre too.

Is Dube the future RW for Tkachuk/Backlund?

Kansas City loaned forward Jared VanWormer to Stockton today. I've been watching him all year and hoping he would finally get his shot up there. He is one of the alternate captains for the Mavericks and has been called up to 3 different AHL teams this season. He was also the Mavs all-star representative and while he has been in KC this year he has racked up 18 goals, 25 assists for 43 points in 47 games.

Not a great angle, but Valimaki with a beauty off the rush tonight.

Pretty scathing report on the Heat over at FlamesNation. Stockton is out of the playoffs again and the columnist laments both the lack of talent supplied by the Flames and the coaching.

And yet some solid/decent players have graduated (however temporarily) to the Flames - Andersson, Kylington, Mangipane, Rittich - With other notables Dube, Vilimaki, Lazar.

Leads me to ask - which is preferable from the farm team - developing good players for the NHL or Having a winning/championship minor team? (would like both, I know, but that seems a bit unlikely.) Do the Flames owe Stockton fans anything?

The consistent trading away of top picks has done the Heat no favours. The outcome for the Flames has arguably been beneficial, but the outcome in the AHL is a severe lack of defence and 'top end talent'. The problems the Heat will be having have no apparent solution in coming either. The Euro players and CHL players coming in are mostly long shots at having NHL careers. Its not the end of the world, but it is a good thing that the Flames will be drafting in first round this year.

Because the farm team is owned by the Flames, number 1 priority is developing good players.

Keeping the fans in Stockton happy is secondary and really only of some concern to them because it helps to offset the cost of running a team and keeps business partners happy (e.g. the city that owns the arena).

That being said the Flames did get some AAAA players in Stockton like Taormina, Quine, Graovac, and Robinson who have a combined guaranteed AHL salary of $1.55 million.

They are investing in the team. The results just haven't been there.

Hard to say the Flames didn't give them any talent. It's just unfortunate (for the Heat anyway) that they lost Mangiapane and Andersson, and for big chunks of the season lost Dube, Valimaki, and Quine.

That's basically taking a top line and a top pairing off the roster. How many teams do well after that happens? This also comes on the back of losing Hathaway and Jankowski last year.

Yes, trading picks has diluted the pool, no doubt. It also doesn't help that what talent was there is now in the show.

With the AHL season winding up and all, do we have a good idea of which prospects will graduate to the AHL next season?

For sure-
Adam Ruzicka

Only if they come to N.A-
Filip Sveningsson
Eetu Tuulola
Linus Lindstrom

Maybe-
D'Artagnan Joly

Is this correct?

Pospisil might be going pro. Depends on whether he found a college that he can get into.

I know that it was asked earlier, but do you think there is any buzz around the Euro players coming over?

Have to think that Tuulola and Linstrom see the current roster depth in the AHL as an advantage. My guess is Sveningsson stays in Sweden for another year.

No buzz really.

But remember it is a two way street. The Flames would probably welcome them all if they were willing to sign AHL contracts instead of NHL deals. Keep in mind that the Flames need to give the respective Euro clubs a $240k US transfer fee to sign them to NHL deals along with a 3 year ELC commitment.

If the Flames don't like the probability of success they aren't going to offer them NHL deals.

Stockton has signed college free agents Mason Morelli and Corey Schueneman to ATOs. Schueneman signed an AHL deal for next season as well, so we will definitely see him at Flames development and training camp. Looks like Morelli is auditioning for a pro contract.

Heat have signed Swedish college free agent LW Sebastian Vidmar to an ATO.

Vidmar played with Foo at Union in 15/16 and 16/17. In 16/17 Foo, Vechionne, and Vidmar was one of the most dominant lines in NCAA hockey. Vidmar's production dipped once Foo and Vechionne went pro in 2017.

Vidmar attended Flames development camp in 2017.

GILLY GILLY
Jon Gillies was exceptional once again between the pipes for Stockton on Friday, stopping 38 of 41 shots faced while helping steady the penalty kill against Iowa’s dangerous power play unit. The 38 stops was a season-best for Gillies in a winning effort. The netminder has gotten the starting nod in 12-straight games for the Heat while providing consistently-strong play throughout the recent stretch with a .917 SVP and a record of 7-4-1-0. In his last seven wins, Gillies has stopped 231 of 248 shots faced (.931 SVP) while allowing more than two goals just twice.

I see Valimaki was in the lineup after some speculation he was hurt. I guess at this point, it’s rather clear he has moved down the depth chart for this season as you’d think they’d be getting him playoff ready in the NHL otherwise. Still think he would be first option if a LHD goes down but maybe not.

Valimaki and Kylington both got pushed down the depth chart for the remainder of the season with the Fantenberg acquisition.
