While biting was the wrong call, I can’t help but feel a little sympathy for Roussel. Someone aggressively pushing their fist in your face would definitely trigger a fight or flight response, and he had nowhere to go. Bad call, and dangerous, but what would you do?

No argument here, and I’d say you extend that well beyond sports (I mean, situation depending I guess), but I don’t know that “don’t get into that situation” is a reasonable response. Vlasic certainly didn’t need to try to grind his fist through Roussel’s face either. I’m not sure that has any stronger place in sports than biting.

And as I said, if that’s happening to you and you got nowhere to go, what do you do?

I get what you’re saying, but given that reversing time is actually impossible, I don’t think anybody is getting a fist ground into their face and thinking “It’s my responsibility to take this without struggle, for I have put myself in this situation.”

I was just asking what others would do if already in the situation. It being wrong aside, I doubt he was thinking “I’m going to bite him,” it was probably just a panic response.
